Tripp Lite's 4-Port USB 1.1 over Cat5 extender hub allows USB peripherals to be located up to 150 ft. from your computer. Simply plug the transmitter into the USB port on your computer, connect your USB peripherals, and run Cat5e/Cat6 cable up to 150 ft. to the remote receiver unit and connected devices. Plug-and-play; no software or drivers required. Compliant with the Federal Trade Agreements Act (TAA) for GSA Schedule purchases.

Answer: 
If it works fine without it, that's okay. Some devices may require more power than the 4port hub can provide, so the AC adapter will provide the additional power needed.
