Network Wiring Closets

Network/Wiring Closet (IDF)

Challenges & Trends

Typical Environment

  • 1-3 open-frame racks or wall-mount cabinets containing VOIP, IP telephony and computer networking equipment
  • Functions as a hub, connecting computer, security and phone systems to a wide area network
  • Typically cooled using passive or fan-assisted ventilation
  • Physical access controlled by a door keypad or magnetic card reader
  • Supports a branch office or section of a large building or campus

Security: Wiring closets are often unmanned and in remote locations, yet the equipment they contain must still be protected from unauthorized access.

Limited space: Wiring closets are typically small (~200 sq. feet), making it difficult to access equipment and maintain adequate airflow.

Cable management/ventilation: Wiring closets house dense network cabling, which obstructs airflow and limits equipment accessibility.

Remote access and monitoring: Wiring closets are often in out-of-the-way locations. When problems occur or systems require maintenance, technical staff must be able to access equipment and monitor environmental conditions remotely.
