Product FAQs
- Are there any plans to support the USB Server (US-4A)/4-Port Print Server (PS-4A) on Linux? Do you know when (or if) you are planning on having a Linux driver for the USB Server (US-4A)/4-Port Print Server (PS-4A)?
- At the moment, the USB Server (US-4A)/4-Port Print Server (PS-4A) is only supported on Mac OS X and Windows platforms. Linux support is not currently planned
- but won't stay "auto connected" with my iMac ... as soon as I close the window, the "boxes" become "unchecked."
- The Keyspan Server settings for Auto-Connect are kept in the following file: com.keyspan.KeyspanNHCI.plist This file is located in [yourHardDriveName]/Library/Preferences/ If you the Auto-Connect check boxes do not stay checked, it is because there is a permission issue with this files (either the file doesn't have the right permission or you account doesn't have the right permissions to access/modify this file). Here are some possible workarounds for this problem: * Close the Keyspan Server Utility, delete the 'com.keyspan.KeyspanNHCI.plist' and reboot. * Run Verify Permissions/Repair Permissions on your hard drive * login as a user with administrator privileges and see if the problem goes away. If you still have this issue after trying these workarounds, please contact Keyspan tech support. Please be sure to mention if you have more than one hard drive icon on your desktop or if you computer is setup to get it's HOME account from a different computer or hard drive/partition.
- Cable Length and USB Server/4-Port Printer Server Is there a maximum cable length for USB Server/4-Port Printer Server
- When referring to cable length and the USB Server/4-Port Printer Server, you can refer to two different types of cables: A) USB cables (that connect USB devices to the USB Server/4-Port Printer Server) and B) Ethernet cables (that connect the USB Server/4-Port Printer Server to your network) Ethernet cables don't necessarily have a maximum cable length. You can essentially use as much cable as you have. You can also extend your cable length by using wireless networks (ie Wifi aka 802.11) and other 3rd party solutions. USB cables do have a maximum cable length that is set by the USB-IF (the group that defines USB). The length of the USB cable that connects a USB device to any USB HOST (ie a computer or a Keyspan server) can be no longer than 5 meters (16.5 feet). There are some 3rd party products that try to extend this length (by way of repeaters, internal hubs, etc) but the USB-IF does not recommend them. If you have more questions about cable length and Keyspan Server, please contact Keyspan for more details.
- Can I connect a USB Parallel Cable to a Keyspan USB Server / 4-Port Print Server? Can I connect a Keyspan USB Parallel Cable to a Keyspan USB Server / 4-Port Print Server?
- Yes, you can connect any USB to Parallel Cable to a Keyspan USB Server / 4-Port Print Server. While Keyspan does not recommend this setup (for reasons, please read the entire FAQ) there is nothing that specifically prevents you using this setup. Please note that some printers may not work with USB to Parallel cables period (even when they are connected to a builtin USB port). Other printers may work via a USB to Parallel cable but not work when that USB to Parallel cable is then connected across a network (ie like when you are using the cable via a Keyspan Server). Because of this, we don't recommend this setup. If you want to try this for yourself, please make sure that your printer works when using a USB to Parallel cable connected to your computer's USB port. If it doesn't work this way, a Keyspan Server will not help. If your printer does work with a USB to Parallel cable when the cable is connected to a builtin USB port, they it on the Keyspan Server next. Please note that this setup may require you to setup your printer again: * for Windows users, this typically means that you need to set your printer to use a different port (right-click your printer's icon, select PROPERTIES, go to PORTS tab, and select a different USB00x port. See your cable's user manual for details) * for Mac users, this may mean that you need to delete your initial printer from Print Center/Printer Setup Utility and add it again. If you need additional assistance, please contact Keyspan tech support. Please note that we can tell you ahead of time if your printer will work with a USB to Parallel cable when it's connected to a Keyspan Server.
- Can I 'Ping' the USB Server to find out if it is running without opening the USB Server?
- - - - UPDATE: April 18, 2005: Ping will return in v1.3 of the USB Server software. Click the 'Notify Me' button at the bottom of this FAQ to get an email when this issue has been addressed/updated. - - - The USB Server software is meant to be used INCOMPLETE TEXT
- Can I set the USB Server/4-Port Print Server to use a Static IP?
- Yes. The Keyspan USB Server/4-Port Print Server can be set to use: * Static IP aka Manually Assigned * DHCP * ZeroConfig and * Keyspan's 'Default' mode. In this mode, the Keyspan server first tries to obtain an IP via DHCP. If it does not get an IP address via DHCP, it self-assigns itself a ZeroConfig address. See the Keyspan Server documentation for more details.
- Can I Use My Printer's Native Drivers With The USB Server or do I need to use a 3rd party driver (such as GimpPrint or a generic Postscipt driver)? Does the USB Server/4-Port Print Server come with it's own set of printer drivers?
- Yes, you can use your printer's native drivers when using the USB Server. Because USB devices connected to the USB Server appear and works as if they are directly connected to your computer, your printer's driver doesn't know that the printer is connected to the USB Server. Configuring and using your printer via the USB Server is virtually identical to using the printer via your computer's builtin USB ports. You will have complete access to your printer and will be even be able to access your printer's ink levels (using your printer's utility software). For multifunction printers (MFPs) connected to a USB Server (part# US-4A), you will be able to access all of the features of your MFP's features (ie scan, print, fax, etc) [Note: the 4-Port Print Server only allows the printing function to work since only printers are support on on the PS-4A].
- Can I use the USB Server with a wireless bridge?
- Yes. Wireless bridges allow you to connected wired ethernet devices to wireless networks. Connecting a wireless bridge to any ethernet device allows you to move your ethernet device (in this case the USB Server) to locations where wired ethernet connections are not available. Wireless bridges, once they've been configured to work on your network will work with any ethernet device. Please follow your wireless bridge's instructions on how to set it up on your network. Once you've set up the wireless bridege, simply connect the USB Server to the wireless bridge. We highly recommend that you configure the USB Server when connected to wired network before moving the USB Server to a wireless segment. This will help you troubleshoot any issues presented by your wireless connection. PLEASE NOTE: Wireless bridges are different from Wireless Access Points and Wireless Routers.
- Can I use the USB Server's Auto-Connect feature with USB devices that are not printers? Can I use Auto-Connect with scanners, hard drives, etc?
- The USB Server's Auto-Connect in version 1.2.x (and previous versions) supports printers only. If you have only one computer accessing the USB Server, you can configure your USB Server into 'Single User Mode' (see your USB Server documentation for details). In Single User Mode, USB devices connected to the USB Server are automatically connected to your computer. Note: If you have more than one computer and you have configured the USB Server into Single User Mode, please note that the the first computer to contact the USB Server gets all of the USB Devices until that computer is either turned off or goes to sleep.
- Can the USB Server (US-4A) be upgraded to USB 2.0?
- The current USB Server (p/n US-4A) can support hi-speed USB 2.0 devices at USB 1.1 speeds. USB 2.0 full speed devices will work at normal speeds. The US-4A hardware cannot be upgraded to support hi-speed USB 2.0 devices at their maximum speeds.

- Do I have to reconfigure the Keyspan Server Utility to see my Keyspan USB Server/4-Port Print Server everytime I move to a different location? If I wish to use a laptop to access the USB server both in my home network & via the Internet at remote locat
- By default, the Keyspan Server Utility will always see any Keyspan servers on the local LAN provided the local Keyspan server and the Keyspan Server Utility are both using the same UDP port (this is default setting but it can be changed). To see remote servers, you add a 'Server Access Setting' to the Keyspan Server Utility to see the remote Keyspan server. This setting is saved until you delete it yourself. If you want to keep access to a Keyspan Server, just add a 'Server Access Setting' for that server in the Keyspan Server Utility. This will let you see the server while you are away from the network and while your are on the LAN where the server resides without having to change any settings.
- Do I need a special router to use the Keyspan USB Server/Print Server (models US-4A/PS-4A)? Can I use any router with the Keyspan USB Server/Print Server (models US-4A/PS-4A)? Can I use any wireless router with the Keyspan USB Server/Print Server (m
- Keyspan USB Server (Model#: US-4A) and Print Server (Model#: PS-4A) can be used with ANY router that supports Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Static IP Addresses. Once you connect Keyspan USB Server or Print Server to your router, it acts like a computer in your Local Area Network. By default, it will try to obtain an IP address automatically from your DHCP server/Router. If it fails to obtain one, then it will try static IP address. If there is no static IP was assigned, it will assign an IP address to itself using Zero Config. Note #1: Some wireless routers may put wireless network and wired network into two different network segments on the same router. If your computer uses wireless network and Keyspan USB Server or Print Server uses wired network on the router, your computer will not see the Keyspan server since it is in different network from Keyspan Server. Please contact your router manufacture for help on how to connect wired ethernet devices to wireless network. Note #2: You can also connect Keyspan USB Server or Print Server to a access point. But you need to make sure ETHERNET BRIDGING feature is turn on. Please contact your access point’s manufacture for help on how to do this.
- Do Keyspan USB Devices Use IRQ (interrupt request line) addresses?
- USB host devices, like USB PCI cards and the USB ports on your computers, are often assigned IRQs. However, by design, all USB devices, not just devices made by Keyspan, do not use IRQ in any way.
- Do Keyspan USB Servers support virtual software platforms?
- IMPORTANT NOTE! Regarding the USB Device Server products - VMWare, VMWare Server or any other virtualization software has never been officially supported or tested. Due to variations and changes in the VM usage, a standard cannot be utilized to guarantee compatibility with the Keyspan USB Server line. Keyspan DOES NOT SUPPORT VIRTUALPC DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES WITH VIRTUALPC. VirtualPC does not provide reliable USB or serial connections like a 'real' Mac or a 'real' PC would. Depending on your device, your computer and your computer's configuration, you may or may not experience problems with using VirtualPC. Unfortunately, VirtualPC works differently on different computers. In some cases, VirtualPC may work differently if across two computers that have the same configuration. Because of this fact, web pages/blogs/usenet postings/etc. reporting success with using VirtualPC may not apply to your specific configuration. If you are running Parallels or VMWare on an Intel Mac, you can create a 'real' PC environment. On these Macs, you can run BootCamp. BootCamp will make your Mac into a 'real PC' with 100% compatibility (as Steve Jobs states in his 2007 WWDC keynote). Emulators such as VMWare and Parallels are great (also stated in the same WWDC 2007 keynote), but they can cause issues for hardware because these software programs can never fully replicate the speed and timing of a 'real PC'. These programs are great for running other programs (ie word, excel, etc) but things can fail the minute hardware is involved (ie: USB devices).
- Does Keyspan have any Windows NT compatible products? Why doesn't the Keyspan File Transfer Cable load/install on Windows NT?
- Most Keyspan products require at least Windows 98 or better. For specific information about a certain product's minimum system requirements, please see that product's documentation and our web page on Keyspan's website. Windows NT is often not supported due to the stability of USB drivers on Windows NT. Additional Info About the UFT-125 (Keyspan File Transfer Cable) Please note that the 'parallel' side of the UFT-125 is not supported on Windows NT. The Parallel side requires: Windows 95/98/98SE/Me/2000/XP.
- Does Keyspan offer any product that will allow me to connect my ADB device to my computer?
- Keyspan does not offer a USB to ADB adapter at this time. For the most up-to-date list of our current products, please visit the following URL: http://www.tripplite.com/EN/products/index.cfm POINT TO CORECT LINK
- Does the USB Server (model US-4A) support Isochronous USB devices?
- At this time, the USB Server (Model # US-4A) does not support Isochronous USB devices. There are no plans to add this feature in the immediate future to the existing USB Server (Model # US-4A). If you have an Isochronous USB device that you are interested in using with the USB Server or a USB Server type device, please submit a request via our support system. http://www.tripplite.com/EN/support/PreSales-Tech-Support.cfm
- Does the USB Server support bi-directional communication?
- Yes. Unlike many print servers, the USB Server allows you to communicate with your USB device as if it is connected directly to your computer. Because of this feature, the Keyspan USB Server can support printers, multifunction printers, scanners, hard drives, and input devices (ie mice, keyboards, etc.). For printers, you are able to print and see your printer's ink levels. For multifunction printers, you're able to use all of your device's features (ie print, scan, fax, etc.). Scanners, hard drives, and input devices work as if they are connected directly to your computer.
- Does the USB Server/4-Port Print Server support IPP printing? I am wondering if the USB Server/4-Port Print Server supports IPP for printing via the internet.
- The USB Server/4-Port Print Server offer direct USB connectivity (bi-directional) between your computer and printers connected to Keyspan servers. This is different from traditional queue-based print servers and therefore provides features that aren't found on these older print (ie ink levels are supported and fax/scan features are available (on US-4A model only)). Because of this, IPP is not implemented on Keyspan Server (models US-4A and PS-4A). IPP is traditionally used to communicate with printers over two different subnets or across the Internet. This is also possible using a Keyspan Server but it is not implemented via the IPP protocol. You can connect to a Keyspan Server over WAN (ie across two different subnets or across the Internet) if you know your Keyspan's server's IP address. Once you have this address, you can setup you Keyspan Server Utility (software) to connect to a remote Keyspan Server (this is done in the SERVER ACCESS SETTINGS in the LOCAL SETTINGS tab, see your Keyspan Server manual for details). Once connected to a remote Keyspan Server, you can use any printer (or other USB device if you have a US-4A; PS=4A only supports printers) over the WAN/Internet.
- Error: Attempting To Connect in Keyspan Server Utility's 'Servers' tab
- The "Attempting To Connect" message that is shown in the Keyspan Server Utility's SERVER tab means: * your computer has received network messages from the Keyspan Server hardware * your computer is trying to send messages back to the Keyspan Server to confirm a connection but the Keyspan Server is not receiving the messages. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Possible Issues - - - - - - - - - - - - - The most typical causes of this issue are: * you have a software or hardware based firewall installed that is blocking access to the Keyspan Server. * you are not on the same network as your Keyspan server (ie your Keyspan server has an IP address of 192.168.0.50 and you have an address of 192.168.1.50. Note that the 3rd number is different). * you are using a router/ that is not properly broadcast UDP packets. The firewall issue is the most likely issue. Note that some firewalls will incorrectly report that they are off or disabled. Do not assume that your firewall is not the cause the of the issue. In other cases, you may have installed a virus protection software package that included a firewall. In this case, you will often have two firewalls running at the same time. You will need to address both firewalls. Please see the Workarounds section below for how to address firewall related issues. Having a different subnet doesn't happen very often but it can if you are using multiple routers or if you are using an wireless connection. Please see the Workarounds section below for general advice on how to address these related issues. Having a router/ that is not properly broadcast UDP packets is very rare but it can happen. This is typically seen with very old routers (3+ years) but it has occurred in Verizon Actiontec routers as well. Please address the following issues first before attempted to solve this issue. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Workarounds - Firewalls - - - - - - - - - - - - - To solve firewall related issues, you need to create an 'Exception', 'Rule', 'Allow Setting', etc that will allow access to port 3842 (UDP) and another one for port 3842 (TCP). This process is different for every firewall. Keyspan provides instructions for Windows firewall in our User Manual and in our online FAQs (see below). If you have configured your firewall and still have issues, please contact Keyspan support. If you have a wireless connection, please see the 'Workarounds - Different Subnets' section below. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Workarounds - Different Subnets - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you are having issues with different subnets, the easiest thing to do is wire your computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to. This will help identify the source of the issue and help Keyspan advice you of the next step. If you wire you computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to and the "Attempting To Connect" message goes away, contact Keyspan for further instructions. If you wire you computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to and the "Attempting To Connect" still appears, contact Keyspan for further instructions.

- How to setup USB scanner with Keyspan USB Server?
- Keyspan USB Server supports USB printers, multi-function printers, scanners, storage devices, PDAs, digital cameras, serial adapters, mice, keyboards and more. All USB devices will be shared in a one-at-a-time mode. Before you can use a USB device, you will have to connect to it to gain exclusive access. When you manually connect your USB device in the Keyspan Server Utility, your USB device is logically connected to your computer. You can use your USB devices as if it is connected directly to you computer. When you are finished using your USB device, you will have to disconnect from that device before others can use it. Once you disconnect your USB device in Keyspan Server Utility, this device is logically unplugged from your computer. For USB printer, this process can be automated by using the Auto-Connect Feature. In this mode, the USB Server software acts like a library where your USB devices are checked out for use and checked back in so that other can use these devices. Please note that Auto-Connect feature is for USB PRINTER ONLY. Thus, if you have a scanner, you would need to manually connect your scanner in Keyspan Server Utility software. To setup a USB scanner via Keyspan USB Server, please try the following: 1) Test your scanner with built-in USB port on your computer first. To do this, connect your scanner directly to a USB port on your computer and scan a test page. If it scans fine, then continue to the next step. If it doesn't scan, please contact your scanner maker for more help. 2) Connect your scanner to Keyspan USB Server and open Keyspan Server Utility. Click on "USB Devices" tab and your scanner should show up. If it doesn't show up, please let me know. If it shows up, please go to next step. 3) Now, click on the green connect icon in front of your scanner and this green connect icon will turn red. The status of your scanner now should be "Connected". Now, your scanner is virtually connected to your computer. 4) Go to “Control Panel” and click on “Printers and Other Hardware”. Click on “Scanners and Cameras”. Your scanner should show up. If it doesn't appear, please let me know. If it does appear, right click on your scanner icon. Select "Get Picture Using Scanner Wizard". Follow the wizard to scan a picture or text doc. If it scans fine, then click on the red icon to disconnect your scanner so others can use it. If it fails to scan, please let me know. Please note that A) We don't support HP Director software since it is problematic. B) Some USB scanners have “Scan to text”, “Scan to Email”, “Scan to PDF” etc buttons on the scanner itself. Please note that you would need to manually connect your USB scanner in Keyspan Server Utility before you can use these buttons.

- Most of Keyspan software installers (setup.exe) are created by InstallShield version 6.31.100.1190. You can verify that by right click on Setup.exe and select “Properties”. On Setup Properties window, go to “Version” tab. Look at the File Version field to find out the version number of the InstallShield engine. According to InstallShield, If the progress bar stops at 0% and the installation freezes, this can be caused by any of the following: A. The user does not have their DCOM permissions set correctly. B. Virtual memory is low on the machine. C. TEMP and TMP directories are full. D. Other (usually silent) applications are running in the background (Gozilla, for example). Here is the URL from InstallShield: http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=q106116 To resolve this, please try the following: A. Configure the DCOM Settings on Your Computer http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108324 B. Clean the Temp Directory http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108334 C. Increase the amount of virtual memory on the machine. To do this, right-click "My Computer" on the desktop and select Properties. Select the tab: "Advanced" and then click on "Settings" button in the section "Performance". In the Window "Performance Options", go to "Advanced" tab. - Is it possible to connect the USB server via Windows' Internet Connection Sharing option?
- Windows' Internet Connection Sharing allows your computer to share its Internet connection with other computers that are connected to it. Essentially, this feature turns your computer into a router (like the ones that you would buy for sharing a DSL/Cable network). This is done by sharing you IP via NAT and distributing IP address (to computers/network devices connected to your 'host' computer) via DHCP. Since Keyspan servers are configured to use DHCP by default, Keyspan servers can join a network created by a computer that has Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) turned on. The next part of this configuration is whether or not other computers can see your Keyspan server. If you have other computers connected to the 'host' computer (aka the computer that has Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) turned on), these computers will be able to see your Keyspan server since they are on the same network/subnet as the Keyspan server. This is because all of these computers and Keyspan server share the same base IP address and are considered to be on the same subnet. If you want the 'host' computer to see your Keyspan Server, you will have to first determine the IP address of the Keyspan server. Since the 'host' computer and the Keyspan server are on completely different subnets, you cannot determine the Keyspan Server's IP address using the Keyspan Server Utility. You will have to use whatever tools your 'host' computer has to tell you the IP addresses of computers connected via ICS. Once you have the Keyspan Server's address, you can create a SERVER ACCESS SETTING in the KEYSPAN SERVER UTILITY's LOCAL SETTINGS tab to access a server that is on a different subnet.
- Is My Keyspan device compatible with Bootcamp (Windows booted on Intel Mac)? Does Keyspan support Apple's Bootcamp?
- Apple's software that lets you install Windows XP on your Intel based Mac, allows your Mac hardware to boot directly into Windows. This makes your Mac hardware into a 'real Windows computer'. Because of your Mac is running Windows directly, your Mac is identical to any other Windows PC. This gives you the same functionality, performance, and reliability of USB/Serial/Parallel/etc that you would find on a 'real Windows computer' (as opposed to Windows running in an emulator ie VirtualPC/Parallels). At this point, any Keyspan device that has Windows drivers is compatible with Bootcamp. Please note that certain Keyspan products are Mac only like the USA-28X (Windows never had Din8 connectors therefore most Windows apps don't know how to communicate with Din8 ports). In short, if your Mac supports Bootcamp and you have Keyspan product that shipped with Windows drivers, this will work and it is 100% supported by Keyspan. ADDITIONAL NOTE: Bootcamp, as of July 2006, is beta software. This information may change but Keyspan does not expect it to. However, this will only be determine when Apple releases Bootcamp as a non-beta software.

- The Installer package 'xxx' cannot be opened. The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.
- The message 'The Installer package 'xxx' cannot be opened. The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.' means that installer.app is having problems with the .pkg installer that you have downloaded. This means that that your .pkg file is corrupted. In general, there are two causes of this problem. The original pkg file was corrupted before you received it or the pkg file was corrupted as it was extracted/expanded after it was downloaded. Since Keyspan's downloads are tested before they are posted, the usual cause of this problem (here at Keyspan) is that your file expander (ie Stuffit or Stuffit Expander) is corrupting the file. To fix this issue, we recommend that you: 1. delete all of downloaded Keyspan files (pkg files and zip files) 2. re-download the Keyspan file(s). This time, don't use Stuffit/Stuffit Expander. Instead, find the Keyspan .zip file, select the file (aka highlight it), right click or control-click on the zip file (to open the contextual submenu), select OPEN WITH > BOMArchive Helper. This will open the file with Apple's utility and create a new .pkg file. 3. run/double-click the new pkg file. If you have any questions, please contact Keyspan support. FYI... Upgrading to the latest version of Stuffit and/or Stuffit Expander can sometimes fix this issue as well.
- USB Server and Hard Drives
- The USB Server (part# US-4A) and USB 2.0 Server (part# U2S-2A) allows you use a USB hard drive over your network in various ways. This FAQ is designed as an overview of how USB hard drives and other USB mass storage devices (ie thumb drives, flash drives, etc) can be configured for use via the USB Server. A Note About Formats - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hard drives can be formated in many different ways (ie NTFS, Fat32, HFS, HFS Plus, etc.). Due to the nature of the Keyspan Server, your hard drive can use any format provided your computer supports it. Since the Keyspan Server is connecting the USB device and not the actual file system, any format can be used. Other hard drive sharing products limit you to certain formats; the Keyspan Server does not limit the formats that you can use. Using Hard Drives With Your Keyspan Server - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When you use a hard drive via the USB Server, your computer will detect the hard drive as if it is connected directly to your computer. For Mac users, the hard drive icon will show up on your desktop. For Windows users, the hard drive icon will appear in the My Computer window. Once the hard drive is 'connected' via the USB Server, you can use the hard drive like you normally would (ie dragging files to and from the hard drive icon, etc). When the hard drive is connected to your computer, other users on your network will show that hard drive 'In Use' by your computer (they will be able to see your computer's name in the USB Server software). When you are finished using the hard drive, you can 'disconnect' the hard drive using the USB Server software to make it available to other users. If you intend to only use the hard drive with only one computer, you can setup the USB Server to always connect the hard drive to your computer so that you don't need to connect/disconnect it. Performance Notes: The USB Server, part number US-4A, contains an embedded USB 2.0 >>Full Speed<< (sometimes called a USB 1.1) host controller. You can connect 'USB 1.1', USB 2.0 Full Speed (Up to 12Mbps), and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480Mbps) hard drives to the US-4A. Please note that USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hard drives connected to USB 2.0 Full Speed ports (aka USB 1.1 ports) will operate at 12Mbps. Other factors that can affect transfer rates is network latency. The USB 2.0 Server, part number U2S-2A, contains an embedded USB 2.0 >>Hi-Speed<< host controller. You can connect 'USB 1.1', USB 2.0 Full Speed (Up to 12Mbps), and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480Mbps) hard drives to the U2S-2A. Other factors that can affect transfer rates is network latency. Note About Connection Times Hard Drives: When you 'connect' a hard drive via the Keyspan Server Utility software, your operating system communicates with your hard drive before the icon appears on your system. Depending on the size of your hard drive, this may take a few moments or it may take a few minutes if you have a large hard drive. Once the hard drive icon appears on your system, you can use the hard drive normally. The delay only happens when you connect and disconnect via the Keyspan Server utility. Important Note About Disconnecting Hard Drives: Since your hard drive works as if it's connected directly to your computer, you still have to follow the standard instructions for disconnecting a USB hard drive from a USB port. For Mac users, this means that you need to drag your hard drive icon's to the Trash (or eject the hard drive via the Finder) before you disconnect the hard drive. For Windows users, this means that you need to 'stop' the hard drive before it is disconnected. Note About Connecting Hard Drives Over A WAN/Internet/Different Subnets: You can connect to a Keyspan Server over WAN (ie across two different subnets or across the Internet) if you know your Keyspan's server's IP address. Once you have this address, you can setup you Keyspan Server Utility (software) to connect to a remote Keyspan Server (this is done in the SERVER ACCESS SETTINGS in the LOCAL SETTINGS tab, see your Keyspan Server manual for details). Once connected to a remote Keyspan Server, you can use any hard drive (or other USB device if you have a US-4A; PS=4A only supports printers) over the WAN/Internet.
- What does the blinking USB light mean on my USB Server/4-Port Print Server? Why does a non-printer device cause a "slow blinking" USB status light when connected to the PS-4A? When I plug a USB device into a port on the Keyspan Server, the device ap
- The green blinking USB light (next to the USB port) on the USB Server (part# US-4A)/4-Port Print Server (part# PS-4A) means that your USB device is either: * an 'isochronous' USB device (not supported on US-4A/PS-4A) * an unsupported USB device (On the US-4A, a PACE security dongle. On the PS-4A, any non-printer device) * resetting the USB port. USB devices can reset USB ports. Some USB devices will do this incorrectly and constantly reset the port. If you have a USB device that causes the USB Server's USB light's to blink, please contact Keyspan for further support. When you contact Keyspan support, please provide the following information: * the name and model number of the USB device that caused the blinking light (ie Palm 500, HP Deskjet 1100, etc) * your Keyspan server's NETWORK ADDRESS (printed on the bottom of your Keyspan Server) This information will assist us in solving this issue for you. Notes For 4-Port Printer Users: If you have a 4-Port Print Server and get a blinking USB light when you connect a scanner, please note that the PS-4A only supports printers. Additional Notes: Version 1.0.x of the USB Server firmware/software did not support embedded USB hub and will cause a blinking USB light. Upgrade to version 1.3 or later to solve this issue.

- The 'Separate Compound Devices' checkbox in the Keyspan Server Utility will separate USB devices if the USB device: A) has multiple components in it (ie a multifunction printer) AND B) is a COMPOUND USB device. Note, not all USB devices are COMPOUND devices. In other cases, some devices that are compound devices may only show cerain components as individual items (ie a multifunction printer may only show the fax and printer as a seperate component but not the scanner). In yet other cases, some devices that have no apparent need for being compound devices will be compund devices (certain thumb drives and mice will show up as compound devices).

- What is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 I'm curious about the port speed on your USB Server. The description reads "4 USB 2.0 Full-Speed ports (12 Mbps)". Shouldn't USB 2.0 should be Hi-Speed (480 Mbps)?
- USB 2.0 comes in three different subcategories * USB 2.0 Low Speed (up to 1.5 Mb/sec) * USB 2.0 Full Speed (up to 12 Mb/sec) * USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480 Mb/sec) USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices can be connected to a USB 2.0 Full Speed port but they will only work at USB 2.0 Full Speed rates. Note: In many cases, USB 2.0 is incorrectly used to identify only USB 2.0 High Speed but the USB 2.0 includes differents speeds and subsumes the previous USB 1.1 spec. Note: USB 2.0 Full Speed devices (sometimes called USB 1.1 devices) connected into USB 2.0 Hi-Speed ports will continue to operate at USB 2.0 Full Speed data rates (12 Mb/sec). USB 2.0 Full Speed devices will not slow USB Hi-Speed devices as they operate independently of each other.

- Why do my usb devices get disconnected when my computer shuts down or sleeps (and why don't they get reconnected when my computer comes back on)?
- When your computer is shut down or goes to sleep, your computer breaks all active network and USB communication by default. This is normal and something your computer does with or without the USB Server. What's different about the USB Server is what happens when your computer turns back on after your turn it on (of wake it from sleep/hibernate). Typically, when your computer turns on (after being off or waking from sleep, your computer will recognize any USB devices physically connected to your computer's USB ports and you will be able to use that device right away. In the current USB Server software (version 1.1.x), you can configure the server to act one of the following ways: * When you have multiple computers accessing a USB Server, you should configure the server to use 'Multi-User' mode. In this mode, the USB Server act like a library where USB devices get checked in and out. If you have a USB device connected (aka 'checked out') via the USB Server, you have exclusive access to that device - no other users on your network can use that device until you check it back in. At this point, if you shut down or you computer goes to sleep, that device becomes available for other users to use. When your computer comes back on, the USB Server will not automatically connect the USB device for you as other users may be using it or may in the process of connecting to the USB device (ie is 'checking out' the device). This is meant to prevent one user from tying up a USB device is they forget to turn off their computer or walk away from their computer for an extended period of time. THIS IS THE DEFAULT CONFIGURATION OF THE USB SERVER. * if you have multiple computers and you're using a printer via the USB Server, configure the USB Server to use 'Multi-User' mode and use the USB Server's printer 'Auto-Connect' feature on all of your computers. Using this feature, your USB printers will be automatically check in and out every time you need to print. The USB Server will detect that you have a print job, connected to your printer, print your job, and finally disconnect your printer. This also prevent someone from typing up a USB printer because connections to the print only happen when you need to print (of 2 users try to print at the same using Auto-Connect, the first user will print as normal. The second user may notice that their print job will start immediately after the print job from the first user is complete). * if you only have one computer, configure the USB Server to use 'Single-User' mode. This tells the USB Server to connect ALL USB devices to the first computer that it sees. Since you only have one computer, your computer will have all of the USB devices when ever your computer is connected to the network. If you shut down and restart, all of your USB devices will be 'connected' once your computer is turned on.
- Will my PACE USB security dongle (iLok) work with the USB Server?
- Security dongles made by PACE are not compatible with the USB Server. PACE has informed us that they currently have no interest in making their dongles compatible.
- Will the Keyspan USB Server/4-Port Print Server work with a host-based printer? Will the Keyspan USB Server/4-Port Print Server work with a GDI (GDI type) printer?
- Unlike traditional printer servers, the Keyspan USB Server (US-4A) / 4-Port Print Server (PS-4A) can support host-based/GDI printers. 'Traditional' print server works by queuing printer data in a print queue or buffer before sending it directly to the printer. Often, this method will not work with host-based/GDI printers as these printers are not 'smart' and need to constantly communicate back with your computer. Traditional printer servers will usually only offer communication in one direction (from the computer to the printer). Keyspan server offer true USB communication between your computer and your USB device which gives the ability for true bi-directional communication. Because of this, host-based/GDI printers are supported. Additional Notes: Host-based/GDI printers are 'dumb' printers. In order to print something, your computer (aka the host in host-based) needs to completely draw (aka rasterized) the page for the (host-based) printer. All the processing is done by the computer and not by the printer. In non-host-based printers (such as PCL or PostScript printers), the print job is 'drawn' by the printer itself. Additional Notes: Some Host-based/GDI printers have very specific OS requirements. Please make sure that you have the correct driver for your printer and that the driver is compatible with your OS. If no driver is available, please note that you will need a driver before you can use ANY printer with a Keyspan Server.
