For Mac: 1. Open Keyspan Serial Assistant. (Go -> Application -> Keyspan Serial Assistant). 2. Click on “Keyspan USB Serial Assistant” next to Apple menu and select “About Keyspan Serial Assistant”. 3. “About Keyspan Serial Assistant” window should pop-up. The version number of Keyspan Serial Assistant is written in front of Copy Right information at the bottom of this window. Bug (Fixed) USB Serial v2.1 Drivers Adding Debug Messages To System.log

The USB Serial Adapter driver version 2.1 dated June 02, 2006 was shipped with a debugging feature enabled. This cause the driver to report all serial events to your system logs which may decrease performance and compatibility with certain serial devices. This is fixed in the driver version 2.1 dated June 13, 2006. This will also be fixed in subsequent versions as they are released.

Bug: Port Name Changes If Adapter Is Disconnected and Reconnected When Keyspan Serial Assistant Is Open We have recently purchased a USA49W and have found that when powering up port 1 comes up as KeySerial-Port1 and the rest of the ports come up as USA

This is fixed in version 2.3 and later of the Keyspan software for USB to serial. - - - Original FAQ; This is a known bug in version 2.0 of the Keyspan serial adapter software for Mac OS X. To recreate this bug, you must do the following: 1) install Keyspan serial adapter software version 2.0 2) connect your adapter to your Mac 3) Open the Keyspan Serial Assistant (in /Applications/) and verify that the 'KeySerial' port was created. 4) IMPORTANT DETAIL!!! While the Keyspan Serial Assistant is open, disconnect and reconnect the Keyspan serial adapter. When the adapter is reconnected, the 'KeySerial' will change to a different name. Workaround(s): * Make sure that the Keyspan Serial Assistant is not open when you disconnect and reconnect the Keyspan adapter. This will prevent the port name from changing. OVERVIEW: As of version 1.8 of the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter software, the USA-19HS model adapter exhibits unreliable communications when it is connected to a USB 2.0 hub that is in turn connected to a USB 2.0 port on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.4. SYMPTOMS: The USA-19HS will work and then stop working or not work at all/ WORKAROUND(S): - Connect the USA-19HS directly into a builtin port (USB 2.0 or USB 1.1) - Connect the USA-19HS to USB 1.1 hub KEYSPAN ACTION(S) BEING TAKEN: Keyspan is aware of this problem and is working to fix it. ERRATA: This only affects Keyspan model USA-19HS. Other adapters are not affected. This problem is also present in Mac OS X 10.3 but the USA-19HS behaves as expected (no symptoms present).

Serial ports can only be used to connect serial devices. You cannot connect a USB device to serial port due to the limitations in serial ports (including the fact that serial ports aren't as fast as USB ports). This is the case where you have a USB device but your computer does not have USB ports. * If you have serial device and your computer does not have serial port, you can add a Keyspan adapter that would add a serial port to your computer. This is the case where you have a serial device and your computer does not have serial ports. * if you have USB device and your computer does not have USB ports, you can add a Keyspan USB Card to your computer. We have CardBus cards for laptops and PCI cards for desktop computers. ADDITIONAL NOTES ABOUT PS/2 PORTS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In some cases, you may be able to connect a USB keyboard and USB mice to PS/2 port. Some USB mice and keyboards include a PS/2 to USB adapter (PS/2 to USB allows you to connect a USB keyboard and/or mouse to a PS/2 port). Yes, multiple Keyspan USB to serial adapters may be connected to your computer. You can connect up to 8 Keyspan USB to Serial adapters (any model) to your computer to provide multiple serial ports. TECHNICAL NOTE FOR MAC OS 8-9.x USERS: If you use the 'Emulate Printer/Modem Port' feature, please note that you can only use this feature on one Keyspan adapter as the MODEM and PRINTER port can only be emulated once (since traditionally there has only been one MODEM port and one PRINTER port on Macs). Other Keyspan adapters on your computer will create CommToolBox Savvy ports that can be used by software that can see all serial ports (as opposed to software that can only see the MODEM and/or PRINTER port).

Can I connect multiple Keyspan usb serial adapters to my Windows computer?

Yes, multiple Keyspan USB to serial adapters may be connected to your computer. You can connect up to 8 Keyspan USB to Serial adapters (any model) to your computer to provide multiple serial ports. IF YOU NEED MORE THAN 8 COM PORTS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you need more than 8 COM ports, we recommend that you use the Keyspan USB 4-Port Serial Adapter (http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA49w/). You can connect up 8 USB 4-Port Serial Adapters to get 32 COM ports. If you need additional COM ports, you can also connect 8 Keyspan single port adapters for a total of 40 COM ports. TECHNICAL NOTE: - - - - - - - - If you have multiple adapter, we recommend that you use the 'Geographic Port Mapping' setting in the Keyspan Serial Assistant's PORT MAPPING tab. This feature allows COM ports to be assigned to a specific USB port making it easier to find which COM port is assigned to which adapter. By default, Keyspan serial adapters are configured to use 'Dynamic Port Mapping' for COM port assignment. When using only one adapter, a COM port is assigned to a single adapter and that adapter retains the same COM port number regardless which USB port the adapter is connected to. For example, if you the Keyspan adapter is assigned COM5, the Keyspan adapter will stay on COM5 regardless of which USB port you connect the adapter to. When using multiple Keyspan USB to serial adapters, 'Dynamic Port Mapping' will assign COM ports on a first come, first serve basis. For example, if you have 2 adapters, adapter 'A' and adapter 'B', that get assigned COM5 and COM6 respectively, and you reboot your computer, adapter 'A' may become COM6 if adapter 'B' is seen first. Because you can't predict which adapter will be found first, you may find that your COM port numbers will jump from adapter to adapter. Because of this, we recommend that you use the 'Geographic Port Mapping' feature. The 'Geographic Port Mapping' feature assigned COM ports based on the geographic location of the USB port that the Keyspan adapter is connected to. For example, if you connect Keyspan adapter 'A' to the USB port on the front of your computer and get COM5 and then connect adapter 'B' to the USB port on the back of your computer to get COM6, and then swap adapter 'A' and 'B', the front USB port will stay on COM5 and the back USB port will stay on COM6. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CONNECT MORE THAN 8 KEYSPAN ADAPTERS OF THE SAME MODEL NUMBER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you connect more than 8 Keyspan adapters (of the same model number) to one computer, the 9th adapter will not be recognized by the Keyspan driver. Windows will detect the device but it will not load the driver for the device.

Can I HotSync my Palm Pilot with Mac OS X?

Yes. Since Palm's HotSync software is not Mac OS X native, you will need to install the Keyspan 'Classic' software (aka the Mac OS 9.x compatible drivers) and then configure the HotSync Manager Application as you would under Mac OS 9.x. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have installed the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter Family driver for Mac OS X, you MUST uninstall it before installing the Keyspan 'Classic' software. The two drivers are not compatible with each other.

Mac OS X allows you to print in various ways (ie you can print from Mac OS X, Classic [Mac OS 9 emulated within Mac OS X], etc). Because of this, there are different requirements for each method of printing. This FAQ outlines the most common methods and discusses requirements for each. - - - To print from Mac OS X applications to a serial printer, you will need: - a Mac OS X SERIAL printer driver for your printer (provided by your printer manufacturer or a 3rd party) - an Mac OS X serial port (like the one that is created by the Keyspan serial port hardware and software) If you have both of the above, please refer to you printer driver's documentation for instructions on how to select a serial port. Once you find the location where to select a serial port, your Keyspan serial port will appear in the list of ports or can be entered as an option. Notes: While Keyspan provides the necessary serial port(s) in Mac OS X, most serial printers DO NOT have SERIAL printers drivers for Mac OS X. Some printer manufactures may provide a driver for other connectivity (ie Ethernet) and not provide a printer drivers for serial. These non-serial drivers do not provide the necessary infrastructure to receive a print job from Mac OS and send it via serial port. Can I use my Keyspan adapter in both Mac OS X and Classic? Why can I can switch from using an OS X serial device to a Classic serial device using the Keyspan adapter, but not from using a Classic serial device back to an OS X serial device?

Due to how certain USB devices (like Keyspan serial adapters) are shared between Mac OS X and Classic, you cannot easily use a Keyspan adapter ON ONE COMPUTER between Classic and Mac OS X. Details: - - - - - If you install the Mac OS 9 driver in Classic AND the Mac OS X driver. Both Classic and Mac OS X will have access to the USB device PROVIDED THAT THE USB DEVICE IS NOT BEING USED (in the case of a Keyspan serial adapter, the device is not used until an application opens the serial port). If a Mac OS X application attempts to use the device, the device is 'removed' from Classic and only Mac OS X can use the device. If a Mac OS 9 application in Classic attempts to use the device, the device is removed from Mac OS X and only Classic can use the device. Once the USB device has been 'removed', you may not be able to to use the USB device in the 'removed' operating system until you restart and/or disconnect and reconnect the USB device from your Mac's USB port. Because of this, we DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU INSTALL BOTH THE MAC OS 9 and MAC OS X SOFTWARE FOR YOUR KEYSPAN DEVICE. Workaround(s) - - - - - - - There are no solutions to this issue since this is feature of Mac OS X (to allow to use USB devices in Mac OS 9 via Classic). Additional Notes: If you want to use a Keyspan adapter only in Mac OS X, uninstall the Keyspan Mac OS 9 drivers (see your documentation for instructions). If you want to use a Keyspan adapter only in Classic (Mac OS 9 running within Mac OS X), uninstall the Mac OS X software (see your documentation for instructions). Can I use my Keyspan USB device on a USB hub, keyboard, or monitor?

Yes, you can use our USB devices on USB hubs (and USB ports on keyboards and monitors). This is required by the USB specification. However, some third party USB ports (and those in monitors and keyboards) may not follow the USB specification and therefore not provide enough power to our USB devices. If you have a Keyspan USB device and you have problems when you are using it when connected to a USB hub, please connect the Keyspan device to a USB port on your computer. If the problem persists, you have a different problem - please contact Keyspan tech support. If the problem goes away, your USB hub may not sufficiently power your Keyspan device. In this case, please contact the maker of your hub (or monitor or keyboard) for further instructions. If you still need help, please contact Keyspan tech support.

Can I use my Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter with DOS/MS-D0S? I have an older DOS program that communicates with COM ports/serial ports/DB9 ports. Do you have any DOS drivers or any work-around that you could suggest?

Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter create COM ports in Windows. This is done via USB in Windows. Unfortunately, DOS does not have access to USB created in Windows (and therefore can't see the COM ports). This information applies to: - computers directly booting into DOS - computers booted into Windows but using the COMMAND PROMPT (aka DOS prompt, Command Line, etc) to access DOS. For DOS serial ports, you may want to look into a PCI or PCMCIA solution...these types of devices may be seen DOS and/or have specific DOS drivers. Keyspan does not make PCI or PCMCIA based serial solutions for DOS at this time. (Side-Note: Some BIOS' convert allow certain USB devices devices to be seen by DOS by converting them at the BIOS level causing the USB device to be recognized as devices with PCI, PS/2, or other interfaces. This bypasses Windows and there does not have the limitation of USB devices that have USB drivers in Windows. Check your BIOS for information. )

Can I use my serial device in Classic? My serial device used to work in Mac OS 9 but no longer works in Classic....

Can I use my serial Wacom Intuos/ArtZ tablet in Mac OS X? Is my Wacom serial tablet compatible in Mac OS X? Can I use a serial Wacom tablet with my Keyspan adapter in Mac OS X?

Keyspan serial adapters/cards provide serial ports to Mac OS X. These serial ports can then be used by the software for your serial device (ie the Wacom drivers/software). In Mac OS 8.6-9.x, Wacom provided these drivers for their ADB, serial, and USB based tablets. In Mac OS X, Wacom only has drivers for their USB tablets. If you need to use your serial Wacom tablet in Mac OS X, you will need to obtain a 3rd party driver, such as 'TabletMagic' (http://tabletmagic.sourceforge.net/). Please contact the vendor of these drivers for more information. IMPORTANT NOTE: Wacom's serial drivers WILL NOT WORK UNDER CLASSIC. CLASSIC is Mac OS 9.x running within Mac OS X. Most monitors use a VGA connection (a 15-pin mini D-sub connection) or a DVI connection. These connections are not serial connections and cannot be used with ANY serial port. However, there may be certain monitors that use serial connections to display data. These monitors are not the same monitors that you would use with your computer and are often specialized devices to display small amounts of data. T

Difference Between USA-19/Q/Qi/X, USA-19W/QW, and USA-19HS What is the difference between the USA-19/Q/Qi/X, USA-19W/QW, and USA-19HS?

Over the years, Keyspan has made several adapters in the USA-19 line. The USA-19 line is defined as [U]sb [S]erial [A]dapters with [1] DB[9] port (these characteristics make up the part number [USA-19]). The following information outlines the difference between each variant of the USA-19 line: Product Name: USB PDA Adapter Model Numbers: USA-19, USA-19x, USA-19Q, USA-19Qi - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The models in the USB PDA Adapter line (models USA-19, USA-19x, USA-19Q, USA-19Qi) were designed for connecting Palm Pilots, Wacom tablets, and other PDAs to Mac and Windows computers. These adapters only had enough serial capabilities to communicate with PDAs and graphics tablets and therefore using these adapters with serial devices that aren't PDAs or graphics tablets IS NOT RECOMMENDED (the USA-19HS is the recommended adapter for any serial device). Within the USB PDA Adapter line, there are minor differences between the different model numbers. The USA-19/USA-19X (same adapter) has an attached (non-detachable) USB cable that was molded on to the adapter itself. The USA-19Q/USA-19Qi (same adapter) added a status light (LED) in the adapter itself, made the USB cable detachable (the adapter itself has a standard USB type B port that you can attached/detach any USB cable), and was faster than the USA-19/USA-19X (the USA-19/USA-19X supported baud rates up to 57600, the USA-19Q/USA-Qi supported baud rates up to 115200). The USB PDA Adapter line was discontinued in October 2003 due to the fact that most PDAs had migrated from serial connectors to USB connectors. How does the Keyspan adapter determine its COM port number?

Keyspan serial adapters create COM ports in the Windows registry just like the COM ports found on older computers. When you first connect a Keyspan adapter, the Keyspan adapter software walks through the Windows registry to find an 'available' COM port number. If COM1 is not available it tries COM2, COM3, etc., until it finds a COM port number that is available. If your Keyspan adapter creates COM4, then COM1 though COM3 are 'busy' or have been 'reserved' for some piece of hardware or software (ie an internal modem, wireless connectivity, etc). The 'Keyspan Serial Assistant' program (located in START menu -> PROGRAMS -> KEYSPAN xxx -> Keyspan Serial Assistant) allows you to view which Keyspan COM port has been created. The Keyspan Serial Assistant's PORT MAPPING tab (found in versions 3.1 or greater) also lets you reassign the Keyspan COM port number to another number as well as "Show All COM Assignments". This is useful if you find that your software is not able to 'see' your Keyspan COM port number (ie the Keyspan adapter is set to COM3 but your software can only see COM1 and COM2).

Some Keyspan USB to Serial Adapters (part# USA-19QW, USA-19Qi, USA-19HS, USA-49W, USA-49WLC, MPR-112) have a status light (or lights) that indicate a port status. This light means several things but a slow blinking light means that: a) the Keyspan adapter has been installed correctly (both software and hardware) b) the Keyspan adapter has created it's serial port in your operating system (COM port on Windows, serial port on Mac) c) the Keyspan adapter's serial port is IDLE AND NOT IN USE BY YOUR SERIAL DEVICE'S SOFTWARE. d) the Keyspan serial port is ready for use e) that you have not yet configured your software to use the Keyspan serial port (COM port on Windows, serial port on Mac). A slow blinking serial light is NORMAL when you first install your Keyspan adapter however you want to see a FAST blinking light or SOLID light (light is ON but not blinking) when you actually use your serial device's software (the 'serial device' is the device connected to the Keyspan adapter (ie a GPS) and the serial device's software is the software that communicates, via the Keyspan adapter, to your serial device (ie mapping software that communicates with a GPS)). Serial ports can only be used to connect serial devices. If you are connecting Keyspan USB serial adapter to a DB-9 to DB-25 adapter, the internal wiring for such a adapter is very important. Some serial devices require specific wiring. Please check with your serial device's software/hardware manufacturer for information about getting the correct DB-9 to DB-25 adapter for your use.

Certain Wacom tablets require the use of an external power supply in order for the tablet to function. Wacom tablets requiring external power ship with a power adapter that either connects directly to the Wacom tablet to a special serial cable (that has both a serial connection and port for the power adapter). These tablets WILL ONLY WORK IF THEY HAVE THEIR WACOM SUPPLIED EXTERNAL POWER ADAPTER. This is why they have an external power supply (that was included by Wacom). On these tablets, Wacom never supported powering the tablets via external power. If you use a Keyspan serial port product to connect a Wacom tablet that requires external power, please note that you will need to continue using your Wacom supplied power supply. Additional Notes: Any serial based Wacom tablet is supported on Keyspan USB to Serial adapters. Please note that if your Wacom tablet has an external power supply, you must continue using it with the Keyspan adapter. I need help identifying which Keyspan adapter to get for connecting a plotter/cutter

Before selecting an adapter you need to determine what your plotter/cutter requirements are. Most plotters and sign cutters require the following items: 1) software to send data to the plotter/cutter via the serial/parallel connection 2) If necessary, an adapter cable/gender changer, if necessary, to convert the connector on your plotter/cutter to the connector on the Keyspan device (ie DB9 to DB25, DB9 to Din8, etc) 3) a USB to serial or USB to parallel cable to connect the plotter/cutter to a USB only computer In Keyspan's case, we can provide you a serial or parallel cable (requirement # 3) however this only solves 1/3 of the requirement - you still need to meet the rest of the requirements. In regards to the software issue (requirement # 1), you need to determine if your software runs on your operating system. If you are running Mac OS X, you need to have software that natively runs in Mac OS X (and not Classic, Mac OS 9.x running within Mac OS X), if you have XP, you need XP software, etc. If your software has to run under emulation (ie Classic, VirtualPC, Parallels, etc), your program does not get reliable serial/parallel communication with USB/Serial/Parallel which may cause this to not work. Once you have a a program that runs natively in your operating system, you then need to determine what type of communications your program requires. Does it use parallel or serial? If it uses parallel, what type of connector does it require (centronics or DB25)? If it uses serial, what type of connection does it expect (Din8, DB9, DB25, etc). If it expects Din8, our USA-28X will work with your software. If it requires DB9, our USA-19HS will work with your software. If it uses SERIAL DB25, you need to determine if can work via a DB25 to Din8 or DB25 to DB9 cable. This leads us into requirement # 2. If you need a conversion cable (ie DB25 to Din8 or DB25 to DB9), does your software and/or plotter require this cable to be specific? Is My Keyspan device compatible with Bootcamp (Windows booted on Intel Mac)? Does Keyspan support Apple's Bootcamp?

Apple's software that lets you install Windows XP on your Intel based Mac, allows your Mac hardware to boot directly into Windows. This makes your Mac hardware into a 'real Windows computer'. Because of your Mac is running Windows directly, your Mac is identical to any other Windows PC. This gives you the same functionality, performance, and reliability of USB/Serial/Parallel/etc that you would find on a 'real Windows computer' (as opposed to Windows running in an emulator ie VirtualPC/Parallels). At this point, any Keyspan device that has Windows drivers is compatible with Bootcamp. Please note that certain Keyspan products are Mac only like the USA-28X (Windows never had Din8 connectors therefore most Windows apps don't know how to communicate with Din8 ports). In short, if your Mac supports Bootcamp and you have Keyspan product that shipped with Windows drivers, this will work and it is 100% supported by Keyspan. ADDITIONAL NOTE: Bootcamp, as of July 2006, is beta software. This information may change but Keyspan does not expect it to. The Apple LaserWriter II/IIf is a 'LocalTalk' (aka AppleTalk) printer. Keyspan serial ports use serial protocols but do not support the 'LocalTalk' protocol. This information applies to Mac OS 8.x - 9.x and Mac OS X. If your Apple LaserWriter has a serial driver (like the LaserWriter LS or LaserWriter 300), you will be able to select the Keyspan serial port in the Chooser in Mac OS 8-9. Note: LaserWriters have a Din8 port on the back of the printer. This is same port found on Keyspan serial ports. While you can physically connect a LaserWriter printer to a Keyspan serial port, you can only print if you have a serial driver. The RS-232 standard does not specify power requirements for levels on serial ports. Rather, it specifies a range of voltages. A serial port can provide any amount of power it wants to provided that it falls under this range. Keyspan serial ports on Keyspan USB to serial adapters will provide 5V. This is the maximum power available due to the amount of power that you can draw via USB.

The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.' means that installer.app is having problems with the .pkg installer that you have downloaded. This means that that your .pkg file is corrupted. In general, there are two causes of this problem. The original pkg file was corrupted before you received it or the pkg file was corrupted as it was extracted/expanded after it was downloaded. Since Keyspan's downloads are tested before they are posted, the usual cause of this problem (here at Keyspan) is that your file expander (ie Stuffit or Stuffit Expander) is corrupting the file. To fix this issue, we recommend that you: 1. delete all of downloaded Keyspan files (pkg files and zip files) 2. re-download the Keyspan file(s). This time, don't use Stuffit/Stuffit Expander. Instead, find the Keyspan .zip file, select the file (aka highlight it), right click or control-click on the zip file (to open the contextual submenu), select OPEN WITH > BOMArchive Helper. Click on “Keyspan USB Serial Assistant” next to Apple menu and select “About Keyspan Serial Assistant”. For Windows, launch Keyspan Serial Assistant (Start -> All Programs -> Keyspan USB Serial Adapter -> Keyspan Serial Assistant) and click “Help” tab. You should see “Assistant” under “Module” column and the version number is showed next to “Assistant”. If you have the latest Keyspan software, then continue to Step 2. If you don’t have the latest version or you are not sure that what is the latest version for your Keyspan USB Serial Adapter, please download it from Keyspan website. Then, it indicates that you have a defective Keyspan USB Serial Assistant. Stop here and contact Keyspan Tech Support for further assistant. For Windows: To open Device Manager, you need to right-click on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties'. This will open a new window. Click on the 'Hardware' tab and then click the 'Device Manager' button. You will now be in the Device Manager. What COM port number(s) are assigned to Keyspan serial ports? Do Keyspan serial ports always get assigned the same COM port number?

By default, Keyspan serial ports will become the lowest COM port number available on your Windows installation. The Keyspan software will first attempt to become COM1. If COM1 has been reserved in your Windows registry, the Keyspan software will attempt to become COM2. If COM2 has also been reserved, the Keyspan will continue to try each COM port until it finds the first 'available' COM port. This follows the guidelines set by Microsoft for COM port assignment to prevent serial ports from 'stealing' a COM port number from other device. This also prevents helps prevent corruption of the Windows registry. If your Keyspan adapter becomes COM9, then COM1 through COM8 are 'in use' or 'reserved' in the Windows registry. This does not mean that you physically have 8 serial ports on your computer however it does mean that some piece of software has reserved those COM port numbers. Example of software that can reserve COM port numbers are: - Fax software - Internal modem software/hardware - Bluetooth software/hardware - Your operating system (on some Windows 2000 and XP installation, COM1 and COM2 are reserved by Microsoft) - USB to Serial Adapters (like Keyspan adapters or other 3rd party serial adapters) For most software, you will not need to worry about COM port assignment as Microsoft developer guidelines strongly suggest that all serial applications be able to find ANY COM port number regardless how high the number is. However, older applications, and programs that don't follow Microsoft guidelines, are written so that they can only see certain COM port numbers (ie they can only see COM1-4 and can't communicate with COM5 or greater). ALL serial ports have two states: 1) IDLE (aka Available) or 2) BUSY These states are reported to any program that wants to communicate with a serial port. When a program initiates communication with a serial port, it asks for the current state of the serial port. If a serial port reports its status as 'IDLE', then that program is given the go ahead to communicate with serial port. The program will then tell the serial port to change its status to 'BUSY' so that no other program can communicate with that serial port. If a serial port reports its status as 'BUSY', then that program has to wait until the port is 'IDLE' again before it communicates with the serial port. At this point, programs will often report back to you that a serial port is 'In Use' by another application. IDLE means that a port is ready to be used by a program. On Keyspan adapters with status lights, this is indicated as a slow blinking light. BUSY can mean one of two things. The first is that a program has opened a connection to a serial port, has reserved it, but is not sending data at that moment. On Keyspan adapters with status lights, this is indicated as a solid light (on and not blinking). The second meaning means that a program has opened a connection to a serial port, has reserved it, but is sending data at that moment. On Keyspan adapters with status lights, this is indicated as a fast blinking light.

What is the difference between the 'Geographic' and 'Dynamic' Port Mapping options in the Keyspan Serial Assistant for Windows?

The Port Mapping option in the in the Keyspan Serial Assistant's Port Mapping tab determines what happens to Keyspan COM port when you disconnect your Keyspan USB to serial adapter from your USB port and move it to another USB port. By default, Keyspan serial adapters are set to use 'Dynamic' Port Mapping (in the Keyspan Serial Assistant's Port Mapping tab). When using DYNAMIC Port Mapping, the COM port created by your Keyspan adapter 'moves' with that adapter. For example, if you only have one Keyspan adapter and it creates COM9, if you move that adapter from one USB to port to another, that adapter will always become COM9. In DYNAMIC Port Mapping, the COM port follows you adapter. GEOGRAPHIC Port Mapping assigns COM ports based on the geographic location of the USB port that the Keyspan adapter is connected to. For example, connecting a Keyspan adapter to the USB port on the front of your computer and get COM4. If you move the same adapter to a different USB port (ie the port on the back of your computer), you will get a different COM port number (ex COM5). Moving the adapter back to the USB port on the front of your computer will get you COM4 again. With GEOGRAPHIC Port Mapping, the COM port stays connected with a specific USB port. If you have multiple Keyspan serial adapters, we recommend that you use the 'Geographic Port Mapping' setting in the Keyspan Serial Assistant's PORT MAPPING tab. This feature allows COM ports to be assigned to a specific USB port making it easier to find which COM port is assigned to which adapter. When using multiple Keyspan USB to serial adapters, 'Dynamic Port Mapping' will assign COM ports on a first come, first serve basis. For example, if you have 2 adapters, adapter 'A' and adapter 'B', that get assigned COM5 and COM6 respectively, and you reboot your computer, adapter 'A' may become COM6 if adapter 'B' is seen first. Because you can't predict which adapter will be found first, you may find that your COM port numbers will jump from adapter to adapter. Because of this, we recommend that you use the 'Geographic Port Mapping' feature.

USB 2.0 comes in three different subcategories * USB 2.0 Low Speed (up to 1.5 Mb/sec) * USB 2.0 Full Speed (up to 12 Mb/sec) * USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480 Mb/sec) USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices can be connected to a USB 2.0 Full Speed port but they will only work at USB 2.0 Full Speed rates. Note: In many cases, USB 2.0 is incorrectly used to identify only USB 2.0 High Speed but the USB 2.0 includes differents speeds and subsumes the previous USB 1.1 spec. Note: USB 2.0 Full Speed devices (sometimes called USB 1.1 devices) connected into USB 2.0 Hi-Speed ports will continue to operate at USB 2.0 Full Speed data rates (12 Mb/sec). The KeySerial1 port is a feature that was added to latest version of the Keyspan Serial Adapter software for Mac OS X. The KeySerial1 port is an alias or shortcut to the: - the port 1 on a Keyspan adapter (if you have a multiple port Keyspan adapter) - of the first Keyspan adapter (any model) detected by your computer The purpose of the KeySerial1 port is to make it easier for customers and developers to easily identify and select a Keyspan port in Mac OS X based software. Keyspan still Keyspan still maintains its geographical port naming scheme. Because of this, you will get a dynamic port name and one extra port name called KeySerial1. Geographical port names will change depending on which USB port your Keyspan adapter is connected to. For example, if you have a port name called: USA19H4b13P1 This tells us that you have a USA-19HS unit that is connected to the USB location called '4b13'. If you move that adapter to another USB port, the USB location will change and you will get a different USB location and, by extension, a different port name (ie USA19H4b14P1). If your software is pointing to USA19H4b13P1 and you've moved the Keyspan adapter, the USA19H4b13P1 doesn't exist anymore and your software will not be able to find your serial device. HOWEVER, if you point your software to KeySerial1, you will be not have to worry about the port number changing since KeySerial1 will always point to a defined device (see the rules above).

Why do I get the "Keyspan USB Unplug Notice" message on Mac OS X?

The "Keyspan USB Unplug Notice" only appears when you have disconnected a Keyspan USB Serial Adapter when its serial port is "IN USE". "In Use" is actually a term that serial ports use when serial communication is taking place. When a port is not 'In Use', that port is "IDLE". (Sometimes IN USE is also called "BUSY" and "IDLE" is sometime called "Available" in other applications) Disconnecting the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter causes your serial port to be 'removed' from the OS. When you connect the Keyspan adapter again, the serial port gets 'added' again. Removing a serial port (by physically disconnecting the Keyspan adapter) can cause your serial device's software to behave in unexpected ways (ie crash, corrupt data, lose data, etc) since serial programs don't know what to do when the serial port that they're using is removed. For example, if you are using a modem via your Keyspan adapter and you disconnect the physically disconnect the Keyspan adapter from your USB port while you are using the modem (ie faxing, connecting to the internet, etc), you will get the "Keyspan USB Unplug Notice" message. If you are not using your modem, you will not get this message. HOWEVER, there are cases where the Keyspan serial port is 'In Use' even though you think you are not doing anything with your Keyspan device and/or serial device. For example, software that is waiting for serial communication to happen while make the Keyspan adapter 'In Use'. The best example of this is Palm's software. Palm's software has to 'look' for a Palm to request HotSync command. It can only do this if the Palm software if it keeps the serial port 'In Use'. In these cases, you will get the Keyspan USB Unplug Notice" message because the Keyspan adapter is 'In Use' until you either uninstall the Palm software or disable it via the HotSync controls. Will the USA-19HS drivers work with the USA-19, USA-19Qi, USA-19W, or USA-19QW? On Mac OS X, Keyspan included one driver for all Keyspan USA-xxx model numbers. On Windows and Mac OS 8-9.x, you will to the appropriate driver for your specific Keyspan model number. For example, the USA-19HS driver will only work with adapters that have the model number USA-19HS and will not work with a USA-19QW adapter. If you have more than one model of Keyspan adapter, install the drivers for all your adapters. You can have multiple drivers coexist on the same computer.
