- Difference Between USA-49WG, USA-49WLC, and USA-49W
- The current Keyspan 4 Port Serial Adapter is the USA-49WG. Previous models (USA-49W and USA-49WLC) have been replaced by this new model. The USA-49W and USA-49WLC were identical units and share the same software (the software for the USA-49W works with the USA-49WLC and vice versa). The USA-49WG is different from the USA-49W and USA-49WLC in the following aspects... - the USA-49WG is a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed device - the USA-49WG is faster than previous models. It support serial speeds up to 460 Kbps. - the USA-49WG is RoHS compliant (RoHS = Restriction of Hazardous Substances) - the USA-49WG has Linux drivers. These drivers were added to Linux kernel 2.6.23. - the USA-49WG does not have Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2.2 drivers In terms of compatibility, the USA-49WG is identical to the USA-49W and USA-49WLC. Any serial device that works with with the USA-49W/WLC will work on the USA-49WG. The USA-49W and USA-49WLC are the same product and have the same functionality. Note: The USA-49W software supports both the USA-49W and USA-49WLC hardware. The USA-49WG software ONLY supports the USA-49WG hardware. Due to the hardware differences between the 49W/49WLC and 49WG, the drivers are not interchangeable. - Do the Keyspan serial port products support Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)?
- The latest driver version 2.6b (file: Model USA-19HS, USA-49WG, USA-28XG & UPR-112G Keyspan Driver - Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) - found in Help & Downloads section of each product as well as the download section) will allow the following products to run on Mac OS10.6. Those products are the USA-19HS, USA-49WG, USA-28XG, and the serial port of the UPR-112G. Although previous versions of these serial based products should work with the new driver release, our support staff will only be able to troubleshoot issues with the current skus. We have done extensive testing, but welcome you the user to give any additional feedback to help with the improvement of the this beta driver.

- For Mac OS 9 Users: - - - - - - - - - - Keyspan USB to serial adapters allow you connect many serial printers to Mac OS 9 however Laserjet printers DO NOT HAVE SERIAL PORTS. Laserjet Printers have LocalTalk ports. Any software or printer that uses AppleTalk or LocalTalk is not compatible with any USB to Serial Adapter. There are other solutions to hooking up AppleTalk printers via Ethernet. Unfortunately, Keyspan does not make these products. For Mac OS X Users: - - - - - - - - - - On Mac OS X, HP has only released Ethernet compatible drivers for their Laserjet printers. If you want to use the HP driver, you must use an HP JetDirect product. You may be able to use our USB to Parallel cable with a 3rd party driver called GimpPrint. GimpPrint is not supported by HP or Keyspan.

- Before you begin... This Configuration Example assumes that you have already done the following: 1. Installed the Keyspan serial port hardware (Part Number: USA-19HS) and software (Version 3.4) 2. Installed the EasyGPS TogoGrafix Edition(Version: 2.3.8) 3. Connected the Garmin GPS (Rino 130) hardware to a Keyspan serial port If you have not performed any of the steps mentioned above, please do so before proceeding. Step 1 - Check the Keyspan Serial Assistant Before proceeding, you should check to see if the Keyspan serial port is installed correctly. To do this, open the Keyspan Serial Assistant (in Start menu -> Programs-> Keyspan USB Adapter-> Keyspan Serial Assistant). You will see your adapter listed in the 'Adapter Status' tab box. You should also see the COM port number (ie COM1, COM2, etc.) and the COM Port Status. (IDLE or BUSY). If you see either of these messages, note the Keyspan COM port number (ie COM1, COM2, etc.) and its COM Port Status. (IDLE or BUSY). For example: COM 4 - idle Step 2 - Verify that the GPS is powered on, properly connected to the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. Step 3 - Verify/Config your Garmin GPS is using Serial Interface. To select GARMIN interface mode: 1) Select the Main Menu page on your GPS receiver. 2) Select Setup, then go to “Select Interface". 3) Select GARMIN as the Serial Data Format. Step 4 – Add Garmin GPS to EasyGPS. To Add Garmin GPS (Rino 130) to EasyGPS: 1)Open EasyGPS software. (Start -> All Programs -> EasyGPS) 2)Go to Edit and select Preference…. 3)On Preference windows, click on My GPS Receivers tab. Click Add GPS… button to add your Garmin GPS. (i.e. Garmin -> Rino 130 in Add GPS) 4)Once you add Garmin Rino 130 GPS. The GPS Setting window will open. Select “COM 4 Keyspan USB Serial Adapter Port” in “Connect Via” drop down menu. Select “9600” in “Speed” drop down menu. Click OK to save your setting. 5)Your Garmin Rino 130 will show up in “My GPS Receivers” tab. Click OK to save and exit Preference window. Step 5 - Set up the EasyGPS software to transfer your data between Garmin GPS and Keyspan USB Serial Adapter A> To send your data from EasyGPS software to Garmin GPS: 1) Open EasyGPS. (Start -> All Programs -> EasyGPS) 2) Go to the GPS menu and select "Send to GPS..." (Assume you want to send your Routes, Waypoints, Tracks etc to GPS) 3) In Send to GPS windows, choose the GPS device (i.e. Garmin Rino 130 ) in GPS Setting field. 4) Place a check mark next to the items you want to send to the GPS device. NOTE: Options that are grayed out are not available for your unit. 5) Click OK. The data is sent to the GPS device. B> To receive your data from Garmin GPS to EasyGPS software: 1) Open EasyGPS. (Start -> All Programs -> EasyGPS) 2) Go to the GPS menu and select "Receive from GPS..." - Error: "!SERIAL TEST FAILED!" on Ext. LoopBack Test
- The error "!SERIAL TEST FAILED!" when running Ext. LoopBack Test will happen if: Option 1 (Most Common): You DO NOT HAVE a custom made loopback connector and you ran the Ext. LoopBack test without having this cable. This is normal. If you do not have an external loopback connector, run the Internal Test (this does not need anything). Option 2: Your custom made loopback connector (either made by Keyspan or someone else using the specs in the Keyspan manual) was NOT MADE to specification (as per the instructions in the Keyspan documentation). Option 3: You have a working custom made external loopback connector and you have bad adapter.

- Before you begin... This Configuration Example assumes that you have already done the following: Installed the latest Keyspan software for your product from: www.keyspan.com/downloads Step 1 - Verify the Keyspan com port in the Keyspan Serial Assistant To do this, go to the 'Start' menu -> 'Programs' -> 'Keyspan ...' -> Keyspan Serial Assistant. This will open the Keyspan Serial Assistant. In the Keyspan Serial Assistant, click on the 'Adapter Status' tab. This will show your Keyspan adapter and the current COM port number (ie COM4, COM 5, etc.). Step 2 - Changing the com port Click 'Port Mapping' tab. Once you are in the 'Port Mapping' section select or highlight the Keyspan COM port that you wish to change. With your Keyspan COM port highlighted, select the COM port number that you wish to change to from 'COM Port mapping for the selected adapter port' pull down menu. Important: Please note that you can select any COM port you wish however, you may notice that certain ports are 'in use'. This may mean that there is hardware connected to these COM ports or they have been reserved for the operating system or other software. Changing the COM port mapping to a COM port that is in use may render any hardware and/or software using that port inoperable. Once you have finished setting up the new COM port number, click on the 'Adapter Status' tab in the Keyspan Serial Assistant to verify your new COM port number. Background Info: Changing a COM port is not recommended and can cause serious problems with your computer. You need to change you COM port for two reasons: A) you software doesn't follow the rules for find serial ports and only looks for certain ports. and B) your Keyspan adapter could not be a COM port in this range because other software and/or devices have reserved earlier ports (ie if you Keyspan Adapter is on COM8, that means COM1 through 7 are in use) When possible, you should contact your software vendor to solve issue 'A'. Unfortunately, issue 'B' cannot be solved without changing the COM port. To try to solve issue, please contact the makers of your software and see if they have software that is compatible with Windows 2000 or XP. This means that a) they have tested their software with these operating system and b) their software can see ALL serial ports. This is the recommended option and you should try this option first. If you software vendor need information on how to find COM ports, tell them that Microsoft has plenty of sample code available. Keyspan also has developer information at: http://www.keyspan.com/downloads/ (scroll down to the bottom of the page) If software vendor is no longer in business or non-responsive, please try the following alternative... If this is not possible, the Keyspan software allows you to change the COM port. This is not recommended for various reasons. First of all, the Keyspan COM port is created because all previous COM ports are 'reserved' by other software/hardware components. For example, if your Keyspan adapter creates COM9, that means that COM1 through COM8 have all been 'reserved'. Reserved COM ports will not show up in the Windows Device Manager and are often tied to software devices (and not physical serial ports). According to the rules of COM port creation, set by Microsoft, any device that creates a COM port must respect 'reserved' COM ports (ie if COM8 is 'reserved', a device can't become COM8, that device needs to keep trying COM ports until it finds a 'non-reserved' COM port in the Windows registry). That being said, the Keyspan software allows you to overwrite 'reserved' COM ports. This is done via the PORT MAPPING tab in the Keyspan Serial Assistant (see above for instructions). IMPORTANT!!! The Keyspan software will allow you to overwrite 'reserved' COM ports but this can cause serious problems to your computer. This feature is not supported by Keyspan and may not work in all cases depending on the state of your Windows registry. We can provide you information on how to override a COM port but if you have any problems (ie like your hard drive being erased or worse), you will have to solve these issues on your own. TROUBLESHOOTING INFO: This FAQ ASSUMES that A) your COM port is list in the 'Adapter Status' tab AND B) the same COM port is listed in the 'Port Mapping' tab. If your Keyspan adapter is NOT listed in the ADAPTER STATUS tab, contact Keyspan and let us know this information. We can troubleshoot the problem from there. If your Keyspan adapter's COM port is listed in the ADAPTER STATUS tab BUT that COM port is NOT listed in the PORT MAPPING tab, this means that the Keyspan software can't get access to your Windows registry. This can be because A) you don't have Administrator privileges on your Windows 2000/XP computer B) you have some software preventing the Keyspan software from accessing the Windows registry like a virus/virus protection software/spyware app that aggressively protects the registry/or something similar OR C) your Windows registry is damaged. If you have this issue, please let us know if any of these 3 cases apply to you and we will provide further instructions. - How do I uninstall the Keyspan Mac OS X software for my Keyspan serial port device?
- To uninstall the Keyspan Mac OS X software for Keyspan serial port adapters and cards, please do the following: 1. Open the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT application. This application is located in your APPLICATIONS folder. 2. In the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT, locate the SETTINGS menu. The SETTINGS menu is located in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Note: If you can't locate the SETTINGS menu, quit and reopen the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT. Next find the blue Apple icon in the upper lefthand corner of your screen. Immediately to the right of the blue Apple icon, you will see 'Keyspan Serial Assistant', 'File', and 'Window' menus. The SETTINGS menu is to the right of the 'Window' menu. 3. If you have a Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter (any model), select 'Un-install USB Serial Extension'. If you have a Keyspan SXPro Serial Card, select 'Un-install SXPro Extension'. Note: You may need to enter your user name and password to remove the Keyspan extension. This can either be the same user name and password that you used to install the software or you can use any user name and password that has administrative privilege. 4. Once you have remove the Keyspan extension for your Keyspan product, quit the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT application and drag it to the TRASH. Empty the trash to complete the uninstall process. 5. Uninstall complete.
- How does the Keyspan adapter determine its COM port number?
- Keyspan serial adapters create COM ports in the Windows registry just like the COM ports found on older computers. When you first connect a Keyspan adapter, the Keyspan adapter software walks through the Windows registry to find an 'available' COM port number. If COM1 is not available it tries COM2, COM3, etc., until it finds a COM port number that is available. If your Keyspan adapter creates COM4, then COM1 though COM3 are 'busy' or have been 'reserved' for some piece of hardware or software (ie an internal modem, wireless connectivity, etc). The 'Keyspan Serial Assistant' program (located in START menu -> PROGRAMS -> KEYSPAN xxx -> Keyspan Serial Assistant) allows you to view which Keyspan COM port has been created. The Keyspan Serial Assistant's PORT MAPPING tab (found in versions 3.1 or greater) also lets you reassign the Keyspan COM port number to another number as well as "Show All COM Assignments". This is useful if you find that your software is not able to 'see' your Keyspan COM port number (ie the Keyspan adapter is set to COM3 but your software can only see COM1 and COM2).

- Note: This FAQ will be updating frequently during the 60 days after Mac OS X 10.5's release. Keyspan has tested our products under prerelease versions of 10.5. The following information is based on this testing and should apply to the public release of 10.5. We will be testing the public version of 10.5 after it has been released on Oct 26, 2007. Our results will be updated here. Please note that many of our products are used by other applications (ie Palm software uses our serial ports to communicate with Palm handhelds, Skype software and our VoIP phone, GPS software with GPS hardware connected via a Keyspan adapter). Please make sure that your 3rd party software (ie Palm software, GPS software, etc) is 10.5 compatible. USB to Serial Adapters (any USA-xxx model adapter, any UPR-xxx port replicator) Software version 2.4 or later - COMPATIBLE USB/Print Server (US4A, PS4A, U2S2A) COMPATIBLE Update to software version 2.1b4. An uninstaller is also available (v2.1b3). This version has been posted on our downloads page. Software version 2.0.1 or earlier - NOT COMPATIBLE. We will be releasing an update shortly to address 10.5 issues. Do not install v2.0.1 or earlier on 10.5. IR Based Remotes (any UIA-xxx receiver and REM-xxx remote) Software version 2.4b4 or later - COMPATIBLE. Please note that Express Remotes connected to Airport Express units don't require software. - To Configure MacENC to use Keyspan Serial Port, please follow these steps: - - - - - Step 1: - - - - - If MacENC is currently open, quit MacENC. Install the Keyspan software for your adapter and then connect your Keyspan adapter to your Mac's serial port. - - - - - Step 2: - - - - - Open the Keyspan Serial Assistant application (located in your APPLICATIONS folder). The 'Assistant' will show your Keyspan adapter and the serial ports created by the adapter. If your adapter and its ports (you may have more than one even when using a single port adapter) appear in the 'Assistant', proceed to the next step. If the adapter does not appear, contact Keyspan tech support letting know that your adapter does not appear in the Keyspan Serial Assistant. - - - - - Step 3: - - - - - Launch/open MacENC. In the menu bar, select the GPS menu and then select the CONNECT command. This will open a new window called GPS. In the new window, click the SETTINGS button. This will show settings for GPS. Locate the PORT field and select your Keyspan serial port from the port field. This will typically be KeySerial1. Set the other fields (TYPE, RATE (baud), etc) according to MacENC instructions. Once you have set your other settings, the MacENC will open a connection to the Keyspan adapter. If your adapter has a status light, the light will stop blinking slowly (indicating that the port is IDLE) and will turn on and stay solid (not blink) or blink rapidly (indicating that port has been opened by MacENC). Set Up Is Now Complete. - - - - - - - - Support Notes - - - - - - - - Keyspan has writing this configuration guide. This information is focused on configuring the program to use your Keyspan serial port(s). There may be additional steps needed to configure other aspects of the program that are not Keyspan related. - The Installer package 'xxx' cannot be opened. The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.
- The message 'The Installer package 'xxx' cannot be opened. The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.' means that installer.app is having problems with the .pkg installer that you have downloaded. This means that that your .pkg file is corrupted. In general, there are two causes of this problem. The original pkg file was corrupted before you received it or the pkg file was corrupted as it was extracted/expanded after it was downloaded. Since Keyspan's downloads are tested before they are posted, the usual cause of this problem (here at Keyspan) is that your file expander (ie Stuffit or Stuffit Expander) is corrupting the file. To fix this issue, we recommend that you: 1. delete all of downloaded Keyspan files (pkg files and zip files) 2. re-download the Keyspan file(s). This time, don't use Stuffit/Stuffit Expander. Instead, find the Keyspan .zip file, select the file (aka highlight it), right click or control-click on the zip file (to open the contextual submenu), select OPEN WITH > BOMArchive Helper. This will open the file with Apple's utility and create a new .pkg file. 3. run/double-click the new pkg file. If you have any questions, please contact Keyspan support. FYI... Upgrading to the latest version of Stuffit and/or Stuffit Expander can sometimes fix this issue as well.
- Troubleshooting: Palm on Mac OS X Using Keyspan Serial Ports
- Step 1: Check The Keyspan Serial Assistant / Connect The Keyspan Adapter - - - - - If you have not installed the Keyspan software, please install it before proceeding. Once the Keyspan software is installed, connect the Keyspan adapter to your computer's USB port. Since we are troubleshooting, connect the Keyspan adapter directly into a USB port on your computer and not a USB port on a USB hub, keyboard, or monitor (you can connect the Keyspan adapter later to the desired port - connecting the adapter to a built in USB port eliminates problems introduced by USB ports on USB hub, keyboards, and mice). Now that the Keyspan adapter is connected to a built in USB port, open the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT application. This application is found in your APPLICATIONS folder in Mac OS X. Once the KEYSPAN SERIAL ASSISTANT is open, you should be able to see your Keyspan adapter listed in the Keyspan Serial Assistant window. [Step 1: Option A: SUCCESS: Adapter Shows Up In Keyspan Serial Assistant Window] If your adapter shows up in the Keyspan Serial Assistant window, click the triangle on the LEFT of your adapter's name. This will show the name of the port that was created by your adapter (ie USAxxxyyy.p1). Please take note of this port name as we will need this in Step 3. Once you have noted the port name, close the Keyspan Serial Assistant and proceed to Step 2. [Step 1: Option A: FAILURE :Adapter DOES NOT SHOW UP In Keyspan Serial Assistant Window] If your adapter does not show up in the Keyspan Serial Assistant window, please inform Keyspan tech support of this and let us know which specific Keyspan product (name and part number) you are using. We will be able to assist you from this point on. Step 2: Open the Palm Desktop Software For Mac OS X - - - - - Open the Palm Desktop Software for Mac OS X. If you do not know how to do this or what this means, contact Palm tech support or read the Palm Mac OS X documentation. Once you have opened the Palm Desktop application proceed to Step 3. Step 3: Access The HotSync Manager And Select the Keyspan Port (from Step 1) - - - - - In the Palm Desktop Software, open the HotSync menu (located in the menu bar) and select SETUP. This will open a window with two tabs. Click the HOTSYNC CONTROL tab (the left tab). In the HOTSYNC CONTROL tab, set HOTSYNC to DISABLED (this needs to be done anytime you make a change to the HotSync options on your computer). Next, click the CONNECTION SETTINGS tab. In the CONNECTION SETTINGS tab, you should see a list of connection types with check boxes to the left the connection names. Once the connections/ports will be your Keyspan adapter. Turn ON the Keyspan connection and turn OFF all of the other (including USB). IMPORTANT!!! Match the port shown in the CONNECTION SETTINGS tab to the port name from Step 1. The names MUST match. Once you have verified this, click the HOTSYNC CONTROL tab. In the HOTSYNC CONTROL, set the HOTSYNC to ENABLED. You have now told the Palm software to use the Keyspan serial port. If you have an adapter with an embedded light, you should notice that the light is solid and not blinking slowly. Proceed to Step 4. Step 4: Try To HotSync - - - - - You should now try to HotSync. [Step 4: Option A: SUCCESS: HOTSYNC Works] If HotSync works, you are finished. If are are moving your adapter to a different USB port, please note that you will need to repeat steps 1-3. [Step 4: Option B: PARTIAL SUCCESS: HotSync Starts But I'm Asked To Create A User] If the HotSync start but you are asked to create a user account, this means that the serial connection has completed but the HotSync needs to create a 'user account' on your computer before proceeding. This is normal and part of the PALM HotSync process when you first HotSync your Palm device to a new computer. If you need help, contact Palm or read the Palm documentation on what to do next. [Step 4: Option C: PARTIAL SUCCESS: HotSync Starts But Gets Stuck On ESTABLISHING CONNECTION] If the HotSync starts but your computer screen and Palm device get stuck on ESTABLISHING CONNECTION, this means that the serial connect has completed but the Palm software is trying to match find a Palm 'User' file on your computer to HotSync with. Since it cannot find the correct file, it get stuck. This is usually caused by bad installation of the Palm software or by having multiple copies of the Palm Desktop Software (and therefore multiple Palm 'User' files) on your computer. For help with this matter, contact Palm tech support for help with cleaning up this issue. [Step 4: Option D: FAILURE: Nothing Happens] If nothing happens when you try to HotSync, repeat this process a second time. If it still fails, contact Keyspan tech support. [Step 4: Option E: FAILURE: Something else] If something else happens when you try to HotSync, please let Keyspan tech support what happens when you try to HotSync and we will direct you from there.

- The USA-49WG is compatible with Linux kernel version 2.6.23 or later. The drivers are part of the Linux kernel and is therefore included in all Linux distributions that include the COMPLETE Linux kernel. Note: Some distributions of Linux decide to not include the complete Linux kernel and exclude certain files. Debian and Ubuntu are examples. In these cases, due to their lack of the complete kernel, you will need to download the complete kernel from kernel.org and recompile your incomplete kernel to include our files. Recompiling your kernel is an process for advanced users but you can usually find guides on how to do this online. In some cases, your distribution may have special instructions on how to do this. Keyspan does not provide support recompiling kernels.

If you plan on buying a used Keyspan item, please contact the seller for original purchase date and documentation. * If I have a problem with my USA-49WG, will Keyspan fix it for free? Yes, provided that the device has failed during the warranty period AND that you have a requested an Warranty number (request for return). Keyspan's warranty covers repair and return shipment to you. You will need to cover shipping shipping costs to Keyspan. IMPORTANT! Please make sure that you receive a Warranty number from Keyspan before you send an item in. Items without RMAs may not be returned or repaired. We are not responsible for items without a Warranty number. - What baud rates are supported by Keyspan serial ports?
- Although each Keyspan adapter is different, most Keyspan adapters support standard baud rates up to 230 Kbps. Since each adapter is different, please refer to your adapter's documentation and/or packaging about its maximum baud rate. Standard baud rates are set by your computer's OS (while maximum baud rate is usually set bu the serial port). Standard baud rates include: 110 300 600 1200 2400 4800 9600 14400 19200 28800 38400 57600 115200 230400
- What is the KeySerial1 port in Mac OS X?
- The KeySerial1 port is a feature that was added to latest version of the Keyspan Serial Adapter software for Mac OS X. The KeySerial1 port is an alias or shortcut to the: - the port 1 on a Keyspan adapter (if you have a multiple port Keyspan adapter) - of the first Keyspan adapter (any model) detected by your computer The purpose of the KeySerial1 port is to make it easier for customers and developers to easily identify and select a Keyspan port in Mac OS X based software. Keyspan still Keyspan still maintains its geographical port naming scheme. Because of this, you will get a dynamic port name and one extra port name called KeySerial1. Geographical port names will change depending on which USB port your Keyspan adapter is connected to. For example, if you have a port name called: USA19H4b13P1 This tells us that you have a USA-19HS unit that is connected to the USB location called '4b13'. If you move that adapter to another USB port, the USB location will change and you will get a different USB location and, by extension, a different port name (ie USA19H4b14P1). If your software is pointing to USA19H4b13P1 and you've moved the Keyspan adapter, the USA19H4b13P1 doesn't exist anymore and your software will not be able to find your serial device. HOWEVER, if you point your software to KeySerial1, you will be not have to worry about the port number changing since KeySerial1 will always point to a defined device (see the rules above).
- Will the USB Serial Adapters work with Solaris?
- The software driver that enables the USA-19HS and USA-49WG is available as part of Solaris 10 Update 5 and later releases. Users should install Solaris 10 Update 5 or later update versions in order to use these products. Latest builds of OpenSolaris also include the driver for these devices.
