Do Keyspan USB Servers support virtual software platforms?
IMPORTANT NOTE! Regarding the USB Device Server products - VMWare, VMWare Server or any other virtualization software has never been officially supported or tested. Due to variations and changes in the VM usage, a standard cannot be utilized to guarantee compatibility with the Keyspan USB Server line. Keyspan DOES NOT SUPPORT VIRTUALPC DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES WITH VIRTUALPC. VirtualPC does not provide reliable USB or serial connections like a 'real' Mac or a 'real' PC would. Depending on your device, your computer and your computer's configuration, you may or may not experience problems with using VirtualPC. Unfortunately, VirtualPC works differently on different computers. In some cases, VirtualPC may work differently if across two computers that have the same configuration. Because of this fact, web pages/blogs/usenet postings/etc. reporting success with using VirtualPC may not apply to your specific configuration. If you are running Parallels or VMWare on an Intel Mac, you can create a 'real' PC environment. On these Macs, you can run BootCamp. BootCamp will make your Mac into a 'real PC' with 100% compatibility (as Steve Jobs states in his 2007 WWDC keynote). Emulators such as VMWare and Parallels are great (also stated in the same WWDC 2007 keynote), but they can cause issues for hardware because these software programs can never fully replicate the speed and timing of a 'real PC'. These programs are great for running other programs (ie word, excel, etc) but things can fail the minute hardware is involved (ie: USB devices).
Error: Attempting To Connect in Keyspan Server Utility's 'Servers' tab
The "Attempting To Connect" message that is shown in the Keyspan Server Utility's SERVER tab means: * your computer has received network messages from the Keyspan Server hardware * your computer is trying to send messages back to the Keyspan Server to confirm a connection but the Keyspan Server is not receiving the messages. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Possible Issues - - - - - - - - - - - - - The most typical causes of this issue are: * you have a software or hardware based firewall installed that is blocking access to the Keyspan Server. * you are not on the same network as your Keyspan server (ie your Keyspan server has an IP address of 192.168.0.50 and you have an address of 192.168.1.50. Note that the 3rd number is different). * you are using a router/ that is not properly broadcast UDP packets. The firewall issue is the most likely issue. Note that some firewalls will incorrectly report that they are off or disabled. Do not assume that your firewall is not the cause the of the issue. In other cases, you may have installed a virus protection software package that included a firewall. In this case, you will often have two firewalls running at the same time. You will need to address both firewalls. Please see the Workarounds section below for how to address firewall related issues. Having a different subnet doesn't happen very often but it can if you are using multiple routers or if you are using an wireless connection. Please see the Workarounds section below for general advice on how to address these related issues. Having a router/ that is not properly broadcast UDP packets is very rare but it can happen. This is typically seen with very old routers (3+ years) but it has occurred in Verizon Actiontec routers as well. Please address the following issues first before attempted to solve this issue. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Workarounds - Firewalls - - - - - - - - - - - - - To solve firewall related issues, you need to create an 'Exception', 'Rule', 'Allow Setting', etc that will allow access to port 3842 (UDP) and another one for port 3842 (TCP). This process is different for every firewall. Keyspan provides instructions for Windows firewall in our User Manual and in our online FAQs (see below). If you have configured your firewall and still have issues, please contact Keyspan support. If you have a wireless connection, please see the 'Workarounds - Different Subnets' section below. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Workarounds - Different Subnets - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you are having issues with different subnets, the easiest thing to do is wire your computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to. This will help identify the source of the issue and help Keyspan advice you of the next step. If you wire you computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to and the "Attempting To Connect" message goes away, contact Keyspan for further instructions. If you wire you computer to the same router/switch that the Keyspan Server is connected to and the "Attempting To Connect" still appears, contact Keyspan for further instructions.
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Compatibility
Note: This FAQ will be updating frequently during the 60 days after Mac OS X 10.5's release. Keyspan has tested our products under prerelease versions of 10.5. The following information is based on this testing and should apply to the public release of 10.5. We will be testing the public version of 10.5 after it has been released on Oct 26, 2007. Our results will be updated here. Please note that many of our products are used by other applications (ie Palm software uses our serial ports to communicate with Palm handhelds, Skype software and our VoIP phone, GPS software with GPS hardware connected via a Keyspan adapter). USB Server and Hard Drives
The USB Server (part# US-4A) and USB 2.0 Server (part# U2S-2A) allows you use a USB hard drive over your network in various ways. This FAQ is designed as an overview of how USB hard drives and other USB mass storage devices (ie thumb drives, flash drives, etc) can be configured for use via the USB Server. A Note About Formats - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hard drives can be formated in many different ways (ie NTFS, Fat32, HFS, HFS Plus, etc.). Due to the nature of the Keyspan Server, your hard drive can use any format provided your computer supports it. Since the Keyspan Server is connecting the USB device and not the actual file system, any format can be used. Other hard drive sharing products limit you to certain formats; the Keyspan Server does not limit the formats that you can use. Using Hard Drives With Your Keyspan Server - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When you use a hard drive via the USB Server, your computer will detect the hard drive as if it is connected directly to your computer. For Mac users, the hard drive icon will show up on your desktop. For Windows users, the hard drive icon will appear in the My Computer window. Once the hard drive is 'connected' via the USB Server, you can use the hard drive like you normally would (ie dragging files to and from the hard drive icon, etc). When the hard drive is connected to your computer, other users on your network will show that hard drive 'In Use' by your computer (they will be able to see your computer's name in the USB Server software). When you are finished using the hard drive, you can 'disconnect' the hard drive using the USB Server software to make it available to other users. If you intend to only use the hard drive with only one computer, you can setup the USB Server to always connect the hard drive to your computer so that you don't need to connect/disconnect it. Performance Notes: The USB Server, part number US-4A, contains an embedded USB 2.0 >>Full Speed<< (sometimes called a USB 1.1) host controller. You can connect 'USB 1.1', USB 2.0 Full Speed (Up to 12Mbps), and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480Mbps) hard drives to the US-4A. Please note that USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hard drives connected to USB 2.0 Full Speed ports (aka USB 1.1 ports) will operate at 12Mbps. Other factors that can affect transfer rates is network latency. The USB 2.0 Server, part number U2S-2A, contains an embedded USB 2.0 >>Hi-Speed<< host controller. You can connect 'USB 1.1', USB 2.0 Full Speed (Up to 12Mbps), and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (up to 480Mbps) hard drives to the U2S-2A. Other factors that can affect transfer rates is network latency. Note About Connection Times Hard Drives: When you 'connect' a hard drive via the Keyspan Server Utility software, your operating system communicates with your hard drive before the icon appears on your system. Depending on the size of your hard drive, this may take a few moments or it may take a few minutes if you have a large hard drive. Once the hard drive icon appears on your system, you can use the hard drive normally. The delay only happens when you connect and disconnect via the Keyspan Server utility. Important Note About Disconnecting Hard Drives: Since your hard drive works as if it's connected directly to your computer, you still have to follow the standard instructions for disconnecting a USB hard drive from a USB port. For Mac users, this means that you need to drag your hard drive icon's to the Trash (or eject the hard drive via the Finder) before you disconnect the hard drive. For Windows users, this means that you need to 'stop' the hard drive before it is disconnected. Note About Connecting Hard Drives Over A WAN/Internet/Different Subnets: You can connect to a Keyspan Server over WAN (ie across two different subnets or across the Internet) if you know your Keyspan's server's IP address. Once you have this address, you can setup you Keyspan Server Utility (software) to connect to a remote Keyspan Server (this is done in the SERVER ACCESS SETTINGS in the LOCAL SETTINGS tab, see your Keyspan Server manual for details). Once connected to a remote Keyspan Server, you can use any hard drive (or other USB device if you have a US-4A; PS=4A only supports printers) over the WAN/Internet.
