Overview

Tripp Lite's DB25-ALL offers dataline surge suppression for any DB25 serial port, regardless of cable configurations. Connects and protects all 25 pins plus D shell chassis for universal protection of any DB25 application. User configurable for use with male or female captive DB25 port. Convenient DB25 input and output connects directly to the protected port, obtaining a ground outlet from the computer chassis. Surge suppression is handled with balanced arrays of high-speed avalanche diodes that divert excess energies created by electrostatic discharges, faulty wiring or lightning away from network interface connections. Tripp Lite network surge suppressors reduce blown interface connections, garbled transmissions, system lock-ups and hard equipment failure by safely shunting dataline surges to ground.

A unique and much needed item

Comments about Tripp Lite Datashield Serial In-Line Surge Protector DB25:

We employ ours at a mountaintop FM broadcast site. During severe weather, some cables easily act as antennas for lighting based impulses. Many a serial port went belly up before we learned about this product and placed it inline with our more sensitive equipment. Knock on wood, after several years we've had few problems. For the minimal cost, this product is good insurance.

A surge protector will protect your electronics by acting as an “electrical sponge” by clamping down on spikes, “soaking them up” and converting the excess energy into heat, thus preventing the spikes from passing through the surge protector into the sensitive electronic devices and damaging them. As with any “sponge” a surge protector has a limited absorption capacity. Once that capacity is reached, the unit is no longer able to protect and must be replaced.
Tripp Lite Data Line surge protectors are designed to provide surge protection on Ethernet-based data lines without interfering with the signal.

The following are some reasons why interference may be found on the data line while your surge protector is installed:

    -Another device nearby is causing EMI (electromagnetic interference) or RFI (radio frequency interference) distortions through the AC line or through the air.
    -A severe surge has occurred and the unit absorbed the damage, as designed, to protect any connected equipment.
    -The unit is malfunctioning.

Follow these instructions in an attempt to identify the problem:
1. Remove the Tripp Lite Data Line surge protector from your application.
2. Connect the device that was being protected directly to the data line.
3. Test to make sure that the device is working properly without the surge protector installed. If it is not operating correctly, contact the manufacturer of the device for further troubleshooting assistance. If it is operating correctly, proceed to the next step.
4. Reinstall the surge protector between the device and the data line.
5. Connect the green ground wire on the surge protector directly to the protected equipment’s chassis (except DB9 and DB25 models). The Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Data Line surge protector must be properly grounded and positioned as closely as possible to the equipment being protected. The length of the signal line and ground wire (if equipped) between the surge protector and the protected equipment should be no longer than 12 inches (12”). It is best to install the surge protector directly to the equipment.
6. Test the device you are protecting to make sure that it is working properly.

If you have followed these steps and there is still interference on the data line with the surge protector installed, then the unit requires replacement.
Tripp Lite Data Line surge protectors are designed to minimize the risk of surge damage that can occur through a data line, such as a telephone or Ethernet port. Please note that Tripp Lite Data Line surge protectors are only for use with Ethernet-based signals.

Here are some reasons why the surge protector is not passing a signal:

    -A severe surge has occurred and the unit absorbed the damage, as designed, to protect connected equipment.
    -The device is not installed correctly. Verify input and output connections on the surge protector are correct.
    -The device is malfunctioning.
     
If your network surge protector is not operating correctly, follow these steps to identify the problem:
1. Test to make sure that the device you would like to protect is working properly. Connect this device directly to the data port without the Tripp Lite unit in place. Make sure that the device is operating correctly. If it is not, contact the manufacturer of the device for further assistance.
2. Install the surge protector between the device and data line.
3. Connect the green ground wire on the surge protector directly to the protected equipment’s chassis (except DB9 and DB25 models). The Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Data Line surge protector must be properly grounded and positioned as closely as possible to the equipment being protected. The length of the signal line and ground wire (if equipped) between the surge protector and the protected equipment should be no longer than 12 inches (12”).
