Frequently Asked Questions

A surge protector will protect your electronics by acting as an “electrical sponge” by clamping down on spikes, “soaking them up” and converting the excess energy into heat, thus preventing the spikes from passing through the surge protector into the sensitive electronic devices and damaging them. As with any “sponge” a surge protector has a limited absorption capacity. Once that capacity is reached, the unit is no longer able to protect and must be replaced.
The Grounded or Ground OK LED light is present on select Tripp Lite 120V surge products. The purpose of this indicator light is to confirm that the surge protector is connected to a grounded AC source. If the LED is not lit, then the unit is connected to an AC source that is not grounded. To provide the maximum amount of protection, the Tripp Lite surge protector must be plugged into a grounded AC source.

Here are some reasons why the Grounded or Ground OK LED will not light up:

-Missing ground wire. (Note: This also includes using a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter.)
-A severe surge has occurred and the unit absorbed the damage, as designed, to protect connected equipment.
    -The LED is malfunctioning.

Follow these instructions to identify the problem:
1. Remove any equipment still connected to the surge protector.
2. Turn off the surge protector.
3. Check to make sure the circuit breaker is reset.
4. Plug the unit into a working and properly grounded 120V AC power source that provides computer-grade power and is on a different circuit than the one originally used.
5. Toggle the master switch to the On position.

If the Grounded or Ground OK LED does not light up, the unit requires replacement.
Your Tripp Lite surge protector is designed to pass power continuously to the electronic devices plugged into it when used under normal operating conditions as instructed in the owner’s manual.

There are several common reasons why the unit may not pass power:

-Your unit was hit by a power surge, causing the internal components, as designed, to absorb the damage and protect the connected equipment.
-The wall outlet to which the unit is connected is not passing power.
-The surge protector is not fully plugged into an AC source.

Follow these instructions in an attempt to restore normal operation:

1. Remove any equipment still plugged into the unit.
2. Unplug the unit from the AC power source.
3. Check the AC power source by plugging in a different device to verify that the outlet is passing power. If the outlet is working, plug in the surge protector. The surge protector requires a working 120V AC power source that provides computer-grade power.
4. Connect a small device, such as an alarm clock or radio, to the surge protector to test if the unit is passing power.

If you followed these steps and the surge protector is still not passing power, then the unit requires replacement.
