Overview

The U420-003 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Cable connects two devices with USB-C connectors—such as smartphones, tablets, Ultrabooks and computers—or a USB-C device to a wall charger with a USB-C port. This 3-foot cable supports data transfer speeds up to 5 Gbps and power output up to 3A for fast charging of mobile devices. Unlike traditional USB cables that can be attached only one way, the reversible USB-C male connectors plug into a USB port in either direction for fast, fumble-free connection every time. Superior foil shielding provides reliable, error-free data communication. Nickel-plated molded end connectors and gold-plated copper contacts ensure superior conductivity and long life. Slim form supports evolving design trends toward smaller devices. Backward compatible with previous USB generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

USB Type-C (or USB-C) is a new, smaller and very versatile connector with a reversible-plug that is capable of carrying data, video and power. USB Type-C is expected to eventually replace the USB Type-A and Type-B connectors currently in use. USB Type-C connectors are used in USB 2.0, USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1) and USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) applications.

Learn More: USB Type-C Cables and Adapters
Until recently, most USB cables have had a Type-A connector on one end and a Type-B connector on the other. A Type-A connector is typically connected to a desktop computer or laptop. Type-B connectors (standard, mini and micro versions) typically connect to a peripheral such as a printer, phone or camera. With a USB Type-C cable, both ends can be the same. Type-C can also support faster data transfer speeds and higher power output.

Combined with the new USB 3.1 Gen 2 standard (also called SuperSpeed+), USB Type-C can transfer data twice as fast as USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), up to a maximum of 10 Gbs. It supports USB Power Delivery, a new protocol that allows significantly more power to be provided over USB, up to 100W. Not all USB Type-C cables and devices support USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, or USB Power Delivery, so make sure to check the specifications of your equipment to see what it supports.

Learn More: USB Type-C Cables and Adapters
Your device must have a USB Type-C port to accept a Type-C connector. Older USB devices can connect to a Type-C compatible phone, tablet, or laptop using an adapter cable (e.g. Type-C connector on one end and a Type-A or Type-B connector on the other). Some devices with USB Type-C ports still use the older USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1) standards. If you have a device with a USB Type-C port running USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), you can still use older peripherals since USB 3.1 Gen 2 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. Conversely, if you have a SuperSpeed+ peripheral with a Type-C connector, you can connect it to a Type A port running USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
