Hospitals and Healthcare

Challenges & Trends

Typical Environment

  • Divided into patient-care areas (which require UL 60601-1 compliance) and non-patient care areas, including nurses' stations, laboratories, radiology, diagnostic imaging, medical equipment, surgical equipment and network wiring closets
  • Various medical and non-medical equipment throughout the facility, ranging from respirators and EKG machines to computers and imaging equipment

UL 60601 Certification: Electrical equipment in patient-care areas (6-ft. radius from patient's bed) must be UL 60601-certified.

Security: Sensitive patient data must be protected against unauthorized access.

Mobile Equipment: Mobile medical devices require UL 60601-1 compliance so essential equipment can safely be moved inside the patient care area. Power strips with UL 1363a compliance are also approved for use inside the patient care area in a mobile application and can be moved throughout the facility.

Safety: Hospitals and healthcare facilities demand an extra level of electrical safety. Medical-grade products with UL 60601-1 compliance provide an extra level of protection with patient shock prevention.
