I use the Isobar 10 HBTSP for my home computer which was built to run CAD programs. I was so thankful were a neutral line went out Tripp Lite protected my computer from the 240V that passed through. It fried the surge protector but no harm came to my computer, etc. I was even more thankful when Tripp Lite informed me that my surge protector was covered under warranty and they would replace it at no charge. I am definitely staying with Tripp Lite.

Industrial strength protection for a home theater and more

Fortunately, I have not been the victim of a power surge, so this review is based on overall design and usability of the product. I will say that Tripp-Lite's warranty and connected equipment policy are the best in the industry and their customer service is perhaps the best in the industry.

In terms of overall design, I continue to be impressed by the thought that went into the HT10DBS. Not only are there widely-spaced outlets for use with transformers, but half the regular outlets face inward and half face outward, in contrast to competing brands, where they all face one direction or the other. This can make a significant difference in devices with large, polarized plugs that only fit one way.

Protection is provided for phone lines, ethernet networks and for three coax sources, although I seriously doubt many would have the need to connect cable, satellite and an antenna at the same time. The one and only shortcoming as I see it is the lack of multiple RJ-45 (ethernet) connectors. Also, I cannot find any specs anywhere as to whether these are CAT5 or CAT6 - a critical difference when it comes to speed. The reason this is a shortcoming is that it only provides for protection of one side of ones router - either the WAN port or a single LAN port.

Let me explain - the majority of the time, this would not be an issue. Most surge damage is caused by a power spike entering through the power line, with a smaller percentage entering over the phone line or via one's cable or broadband provider. A significant percentage of the time, however, surge damage is caused by a nearby lightening strike creating a surge in an antenna. This need not be a direct strike. For obvious reasons, particular care must therefore be taken to isolate an outdoor antenna, or even an indoor antenna. However routers contain a WiFi antenna that is potentially vulnerable to a nearby lightening strike. No surge protector can protect the router itself from this sort of damage, but surge protection on the LAN side of the router could help prevent the damage from spreading across one's LAN to their other equipment. Granted, a lightening strike close enough to fry a router could potentially induce a damaging surge in the wiring of the rest of one's equipment, but why did Tripp-Lite leave open such an obvious vulnerability?

Other than that, this is the best-designed surge protector I've ever owned, and I've owned ones from many different manufacturers. I bought three HT10DBS protectors - one for my home theater setup, one for my computer workstation and one for the spot where I typically plug in my laptop. I've read horror stories of people with multiple brands of surge protectors being left high and dry as the different manufacturers point fingers at each other over who is responsible for damage. Therefore, I have made sure to protect all equipment on my home network with an HT10DBS.

As advertised, and more - This product not only improved the protection level of my home theater system, but also improved the overall picture quality from my (wall) cable source. The design is exceptional, with little wasted space, despite my use of a three-pronged TV cable and 6 additional electronic devices. The extra cable input line and plastic dust covers for the unused outlets were unexpected niceties. The quality, useful design, and level of protection for the price (in addition to the generous warranty) greatly exceeded those of the Monster Power cable it replaced. Thanks Tripp-Lite!

I live in the Midwest and my HT10DBS has saved me numerous amount of times. I own 3 of them. They have saved my audio and video to my PC and WI-fi . I have owned them for years and only had one problem with one of them. that was when we had a direct lightning hit out side my home on my farm. it exploded a huge oak tree and took out the phone line in on the tripp lite HT10DBS. "I would love to show the tree but i cant find anywhere to upload a photo" I contacted tripp-lite and told them about the situation and they were very courteous and got me a new one on the way. I highly recommend this product.

A surge protector will protect your electronics by acting as an “electrical sponge” by clamping down on spikes, “soaking them up” and converting the excess energy into heat, thus preventing the spikes from passing through the surge protector into the sensitive electronic devices and damaging them. As with any “sponge” a surge protector has a limited absorption capacity. Once that capacity is reached, the unit is no longer able to protect and must be replaced.
Select Tripp Lite Audio/Video surge protectors are equipped with IR outlets. These outlets enable you to power a specific device on or off without shutting down any other equipment. This can be done manually (via designated buttons on the front faceplate) or through the remote control that is included.

An IR outlet may not be providing power for several reasons:

    -The unit is connected to an AC source that is not passing power.
    -The unit has taken a surge hit, causing the internal components, as designed, to absorb the surge and protect the connected equipment.
    -The outlet may be faulty.

Follow these steps in an attempt to identify the problem:
1. Shut down and remove all devices that are connected to the surge protector.
2. Turn off the surge protector and unplug it from the AC source.
3. Check to make sure that the circuit breaker on the unit is reset by pressing the corresponding button at the rear of the unit.
4. Plug the surge protector into an AC outlet that provides computer-grade power.
5. Make sure the Power On LED associated with the outlet in question is lit. If the Power On LED is lit, then proceed to step 7. If not, press the SELECT button on the front faceplate of the surge protector one time. Proceed to the next step.
6. The IR 1 LED should now be flashing. Press the Select button until the IR # flashing is the IR # associated with the outlet in question. Press the Enter button on the front of the unit.
7. Plug a small device into the IR outlet in question at the rear of the unit. Turn on the device and make sure that it is working properly.

If you have followed these steps and the IR outlet is still not passing power, the unit requires replacement.
Some Tripp Lite surge protectors offer RJ45 line surge protection for various devices. However, these connectors are only compatible with Ethernet-based signals. When used properly, these ports can help prevent a power surge from damaging any equipment connected to them. 

There are three common reasons why these ports may not be operating properly:

    -The RJ45 cables are not connected to the proper ports on the unit.
    -The signal being used is not Ethernet-based.
    -A surge occurred and damaged the RJ45 protection ports of the surge protector.

Please follow these instructions to determine if the RJ45 ports are functioning properly:
1. Remove the device that is plugged into the RJ45 ports on the unit.
2. Check that the device is working properly by plugging it directly into your signal source and verifying that it is operating correctly. If the device is not working, contact the manufacturer of that product for further troubleshooting assistance. If it is working, proceed to the next step.
3. Install a known working RJ45 cable from the signal source to the RJ45 port labeled IN on the unit.
4. Plug a known working RJ45 cable from the device you wish to protect into the RJ45 port labeled OUT on the unit.
5. Test to make sure that the device is working properly.

If the RJ45 ports are still not passing a signal to the connected device, the unit requires replacement.
Select Tripp Lite Audio/Video surge protectors have a Current Usage LED. This feature allows a user to monitor the amount of power being used by connected devices and helps to prevent overloads. The Current Usage LED can be one of three colors:

    -Green – indicates that there is a minimal load attached
    -Yellow – indicates a warning that the attached load is nearing maximum capacity
    -Red – indicates that the maximum capacity has been reached and some of the attached devices need to be shut down and/or removed

There are several reasons why this LED may be red:

    -The amount of power being used by all the connected equipment is high and some devices need to be shut down.
    -Your unit has taken a surge hit causing the internal components, as designed, to absorb the surge and protect the connected equipment.
    -The LED may be faulty.


Follow these steps to identify the problem:
1. Shut down all the equipment connected to the surge protector.
2. Turn off the unit and unplug it from the AC power source.
3. Unplug all the devices that are connected to the surge protector.
4. Plug the surge protector into a computer-grade AC source and turn on the unit.
5. Confirm the Current Usage LED does not illuminate (when devices are not connected to the surge protector).

If the Current Usage LED is lit with no devices connected to the surge protector, then the unit requires replacement.
There are three common reasons why these ports may not be working properly:

    -The phone cords are not connected to the proper jacks on the surge protector.
    -The phone cords are not firmly seated in the phone jacks.
    -A surge has come through and damaged the phone board of the surge protector.


Follow these instructions to determine if the RJ11/phone jacks are functioning properly:
1. Remove the device that is plugged into the RJ11/phone jacks on the surge protector.
2. Plug the device directly into your signal source to verify that it is operating correctly. If the device is not working, contact the device's manufacturer for further troubleshooting assistance. If it is working, proceed to the next step.
3. Install an RJ11/phone cord from the signal source to the phone port (labeled IN) on the surge protector.
4. Plug the device you want to protect from phone line surges into the OUT phone port on the surge protector.
5. Test to make sure that the device is working properly.

If you have followed these steps and the RJ11/phone connectors are still not passing a signal, the unit requires replacement.
