ISOBAR4ULTRA Isobar Surge Protector

Overview

For more than 20 years, America's leading companies have trusted Tripp Lite's Isobar Premium surge and noise suppressors to protect sensitive computer, networking and telecom equipment. With more than 18 million satisfied customers, the Isobar remains the world's number one selling premium surge suppressor. Loaded with a generous combination of high quality components, near indestructible all-metal case and unique noise filtration system, the Isobar offers the highest level of protection attainable in a multi-outlet strip. Robust surge suppression circuits with sine-wave tracking offer extreme levels of protection against the heaviest surge conditions exceeding IEEE 587 category A & B specifications and reducing 6,000V test surges to harmless levels under 35 volts. Isobar's unique protection system combines large toroidal chokes, ferrite rod-core inductors, HF/VHF capacitors and multiple layers of metal oxide varistors into exclusive isolated filter banks that remove EMI/RFI interference, even noise generated by other pieces of connected equipment. ISOBAR4ULTRA offers 4 outlets arranged in two filter banks to prevent system crashes, reboots and performance problems common as noisy system peripherals are powered off and on. Surge suppression rated at 3330 joules/85,000 amps offers network-grade protection. Widely spaced NEMA 5-15 outlets accommodate up to 2 large transformer plugs without blocking outlets. Diagnostic LEDs confirm power availability, line fault and protection status. Includes 6 foot AC line cord with space-saving angled input plug, keyhole mounting tabs and a set of 4 child safety covers.

It is good, but it is not perfect.

Comments about Tripp Lite Isobar 4-Outlet Surge Protector 6-ft. Cord 3300 Joules Diagnostic LEDs:

I use the isobar 4-outlet surge protector for a few simple electrical appliances, including my alarm clock which has high quality sound capability. I wanted to surge protect my electrical appliances and decrease line noise for my alarm clock. The sound quality has improved, and I like the isobar-4-outlet surge protector. The only drawback with this item is the length of the power cord - 6 feet. It is too short. I could not find any other TrippLite surge protectors with a high EMI/RFI rating and a long power cord with 4 outlets. A longer power cord would be hugely beneficial, as you can't use a power extension cord on a surge protector. The power cord should be at least 3 meters long. A 6 foot power cord is on the shorter side and inadequate.

Extremely well-built and engineered; provides the quality assurance that all devices from which it is connect, are secured from electrical surges, in addition to the signal isolation provided at each outlet.

Protecting a Refrigerator

By Jim

Comments about Tripp Lite Isobar 4-Outlet Surge Protector 6-ft. Cord 3300 Joules Diagnostic LEDs:

This may not be the usual application, but I installed it to protect the electronic controls in our new refrigerator. I don't imagine that the normal refrigerator warranty would protect us against a voltage surge or a lightning strike but this will do the job. I had a question before I installed it and the technical staff was very helpful.

Best product and warranty! No questions asked! Period!

Comments about Tripp Lite Isobar 4-Outlet Surge Protector 6-ft. Cord 3300 Joules Diagnostic LEDs:

During my recent experience with Tripp lite, after two-years having their product. The product did its job wonderfully. In a camper where a 110v is supplied with 30 amp. The electrician changed it
To 50 amps and made it 220v. Very common mistake with RV owners. Long story short. Everything that was not plugged to the Tripp lite was instantly fried. My tv, PC, Internet box are all still functioning- yet my internet box which cost me 120$ has been given me problems with the wireless ever since.

When I called for warranty replacement - it was a matter of a few simple
Questions and tada!! New Tripp lite sent to my door step. I will be buying 5 more in the upcoming months.

Terrible compared to prior models. Can't handle load.

Comments about Tripp Lite Isobar 4-Outlet Surge Protector 6-ft. Cord 3300 Joules Diagnostic LEDs:

This is an awful entry in the usually awesome Isobar lineup. I've been a fan of this company for over 20 years and their products have never let me down...until now. I bought four of these when they were on sale so I'd have them on hand when needed. Not until months later when I used the first one did I find out how cheap and awful they are. I grabbed one to hook the power inverter for our electric car to so it was protected from surges. It could not handle the load from this and constantly tripped off, which is really irritating when you expect a fully charged car in the morning, and you come out and it's stopped charging at 20% because the surge protector tripped off. I tried another one from my stash. Same problem. I tried an older Isobar that's maybe 10 years old - rock solid. Works as expected. So, I thought, well, maybe this inverter is running right on the edge, I'll used these for other things around the house. Tried it with TWO (only two) photography lights - same problem. It trips after just a few minutes of use - it's the ONLY surge protectors I have that do this, including all other Tripp Lite's I've tried.

So, I've just decided this is a bad egg from Tripp Lite. Caveat Emptor. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come from them.

Comments about Tripp Lite Isobar 4-Outlet Surge Protector 6-ft. Cord 3300 Joules Diagnostic LEDs:

I bought a new house and the previous owner had one of these. The metal housing makes it really sturdy and feels like a good quality product. I feel much better with this than the plastic ones. I hooked up my computer and network gear to this and hopefully will never need to replace this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

A surge protector will protect your electronics by acting as an “electrical sponge” by clamping down on spikes, “soaking them up” and converting the excess energy into heat, thus preventing the spikes from passing through the surge protector into the sensitive electronic devices and damaging them. As with any “sponge” a surge protector has a limited absorption capacity. Once that capacity is reached, the unit is no longer able to protect and must be replaced.
All outlets on a Tripp Lite surge protector are designed to pass power continuously, as controlled by the master or individual power switches, to connected equipment.

Follow these instructions in an attempt to restore normal operation:
1. Remove any equipment still connected to the unit.
2. Be sure that the master switch is in the Off position.
3. Unplug the unit from the AC power source.
4. Check the circuit breaker on the unit to make sure that it is reset.
5. Find an outlet that provides computer-grade 120V AC power. Check the outlet by plugging in a device, such as an alarm clock or radio, to verify that the outlet is passing power.
6. Plug the unit into the outlet.
7. Toggle the master switch and all other power switches to the On position.
8. One by one, connect a small device, such as an alarm clock or radio, to each outlet at the rear of the unit. Test the device to make sure that it is working properly at each outlet.

If the unit is not passing power from all outlets after these steps have been followed, the unit requires replacement.
Isobar surge protectors have the ability to minimize EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI (radio frequency interference) on the input AC line. However, a piece of equipment attached to the Isobar may still receive interference from other devices nearby.

Here are some common reasons why a device plugged into an Isobar may be receiving interference:
-A second device that is plugged into the same filter bank as the device receiving interference may be causing the problem.
-Another device in use nearby can cause interference through the air, not through the AC line.
-The surge protector may have taken a surge hit and requires replacement.

Follow these steps to identify the problem:
1. Unplug the device that is receiving interference and plug it directly into a wall outlet. Test to make sure that the device is working properly.
2. If the device operates correctly, proceed to the next step. If it does not operate correctly, contact the manufacturer of the device to determine the problem. There may also be another device close by that is causing interference.
3. Remove any other devices connected to the Isobar where the first device was plugged in.
4. Plug the device that is receiving interference back in into the same outlet where it was previously connected to the Isobar. Test to make sure your connected device is working properly.

If you have followed these steps and the device still does not work properly, the Isobar requires replacement.
